PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The Dartmouth volleyball team closed out the Cherry and White Invitational on Sunday against Temple. The Big Green fell in three sets to the Owls.
Set One (L, 25-18)
The first set of the match was the most back and forth set of the match, it saw 12 ties and four lead changes. The set was tied at 10 after the first 20 points of the match, at the media timeout Temple held a 15-14 lead. Following the media timeout, Temple took a 20-17 lead which led to a Dartmouth timeout. Despite the timeout, the Big Green could not rally as Temple took the first set.
Maddie LaFata had a team high three kills in the opening set while Kauany Gutz and Irmak Makasci each had a pair of kills. Zori Brown was credited with a solo block while Elle McCreery, Gutz, LaFata, and Raeli Smith each had a block assist. EllaMae Fitzgerald had five digs to lead Dartmouth while LaFata had four. Smith also tallied the lone Dartmouth ace in the set.
Set Two (L, 25-14)
Temple opened the second set on a 4-0 run that forced a Dartmouth timeout. The Owls weren't swayed by the timeout and held onto the lead for the entire set.
Gutz tallied a pair of kills in the set while Ava Roberts and Brown each had one kill. McCreery tallied three aces in the set while LaFata also notched a solo block in the set. Sophia Gagnepain led the way with a pair of assists and three digs in the set.
Set Three (L, 25-22)
Dartmouth opened the third set by taking the first two points, the Owls took the next four points to take a 4-2 lead. Temple did not give up the lead the rest of the match. Dartmouth narrowed the lead to one on multiple occasions but could tie the set as Temple closed out the match with a 25-22 third set win.
Brown was the main source of offense for the Big Green in the third set as she had six kills on 11 attempts. Both McCreery and LaFata had three kills in the set. Gagnepain had eight assists, Riley Imamura, Brown, Fitzgerald, and LaFata each had an assist as well. Fitzgerald had seven digs in the set while LaFata had five. The duo of McCreery and Gutz combined for a block in the set.
The Big Green totaled five blocks in the match as both Brown and LaFata had a solo block, Smith and LaFata, each had one block assist while Gutz and McCreery each had two block assists. Brown led Dartmouth with a career high eight kills, seven different players had a kill on Sunday for the Big Green.
Dartmouth takes on Bryant on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 6 PM at Leede Arena. The Big Green open Ivy League play on Sunday, Sept. 28 against Harvard. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+.
