PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The Dartmouth volleyball team fell to Presbyterian on the second day of the Cherry and White Invitational hosted by Temple. Dartmouth took the second set but fell in four sets.
Set One (L, 25-22)
The first set was a back and forth battle as the set saw 15 ties and eight lead changes as the Blue Hose took the opening set 25-22. The two teams split the first 16 points of the set and the match was tied at 21 late in the set. Presbyterian took a 23-21 lead which led to a Dartmouth timeout. Following the timeout, Dartmouth took the following point, but the Big Green could not complete a comeback.
Kauany Gutz had four kills in the opening set while six members of the Big Green had a kill. Elle McCreery had three kills on five attempts while Maddie LaFata also had a pair of kills. Along with her two kills, LaFata had six digs and a service ace. EllaMae Fitzgerald had five assists while both Ellie Mattox and Sophia Gagnepain each had three assists. LaFata and McCreery combined for a block in set as they each had 3.5 points in the set.
Set Two (W, 25-16)
The Blue Hose took the first point of the set and that would be lone lead they had as a kill from Kutz tied the set at one. The Big Green took the lead and made it a 5-0 run early in the set. Dartmouth grew the lead as big as nine and the Big Green took the second set 25-16 to even the match at one.
The Dartmouth offense exploded in the second set for a .395 hitting percentage with 16 kills on 38 attempts. Gutz and LaFata each had five kills while McCreery had three kills on four attempts. Gagnepain once again led the way for the Big Green in the assist column with seven while Mattox and Fitzgerald had five and three each. LaFata contributed a pair of service aces while both Fitzgerald and Molly Power each had one. Eight different players tallied a dig with Fitzgerald having a set high six.
Set Three (L, 25-21)
Looking to respond after dropping the second set, Presbyterian jumped out to a 12-7 to force a Dartmouth timeout. Despite the timeout, the Blue Hose maintained their six-point lead to have a 21-15 lead which led to a second Dartmouth timeout. The Big Green took three of the next five points to make it 22-18 as Presbyterian took a timeout. Dartmouth looked to respond and forced another Big Hose timeout with the score being 24-21. Despite the run, Presbyterian took the next point to win the set.
Dartmouth was once again led by Gutz in the set as she had five kills, LaFata had a .400 hitting percentage with four kills on 10 attempts. LaFata also had eight digs to lead Dartmouth and 14 of Dartmouth's 22 receptions. Five different players had an assist for the Big Green with Gagnepain leading the way with six.
Set Four (L, 28-26)
Presbyterian responded from an early deficit as Dartmouth took an early 9-3 lead which forced a Blue Hose timeout. The Big Green led until the Blue Hose tied the match at 19 after 38 points in the set. After Presbyterian took a lead Dartmouth called timeout. Out of the timeout Dartmouth tied the match 23, Presbyterian called timeout. Following the timeout, the teams traded points, and it was 25-25 and then 26-26. Dartmouth could not hold on and fell 28-26 in the fourth set to close out the match.
LaFata had a team high five kills in the set while Gutz and Irmak Makasci each had three kills in the set. Gagnepain had five assists in the set while Mattox notched three. Fitzgerald had seven digs in the set along with nine receptions and two assists. The Big Green had four aces in the set as Gagnepain had three and Ava Roberts had one.
For the second time this season, Gutz turned in a double double as she had a team high 17 kills and 10 digs. LaFata notched in her first double double with 16 kills and 18 digs in the loss. Dartmouth had a season high 10 service aces as both Gagnepain and LaFata had three in the match. Power had a pair of aces along with two kills and two digs. Fitzgerald had a match high 19 digs and 14 assists for a double double. Gagnepain also turned in a double double with 21 assists and 12 digs in the match.
Dartmouth closes out the Cherry and White Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 3 PM against Temple, the match will be broadcasted on ESPN.
