CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.—Dartmouth volleyball closed out the Boston College Invitational on Saturday against Boston College. Dartmouth fell in four sets to the Eagles after taking the second set.
Set One (L, 25-16)
Boston College took an early 4-0 lead but the Big Green fought back early in the set to get within two points at 8-6. Dartmouth continued to battle in the opening set but could not tie the match. Boston College took the opening set 25-16.
Maddie LaFata and Irmak Makasci each had two kills in the opening set while Ava Roberts and Elle McCreery each had kill. Sophia Gagnepain had four of Dartmouth's six assists in the set. EllaMae Fitzgerald had three digs in the set, seven different players tallied a dig with five players having multiple digs.
Set Two (W, 25-19)
The Big Green took an early lead in the second set as they led 8-2 after the first 10 points of the set. Boston College made it a one point Dartmouth lead at 10-9 which forced a Dartmouth timeout. The Big Green held on to the lead and built it throughout the set and evened the match at one set each with a 25-19 set win.
As a team, Dartmouth had a hitting percentage of .314 with 14 kills. Roberts had five kills in the set while Makasci, LaFata and Gagnepain each had two kills. The Big Green also tallied four aces in the set, Fitzgerald had three aces in the second set while Makasci had one. Gagenepain tallied nine assists in the set. The duo of Makasci and Raeli Smith combined for a block in the set.
Set Three (L, 25-17)
Unlike the first two sets, the teams traded points to open the third set, and the score was tied at seven after 14 points. Despite Boston College taking a slim lead, the Big Green continued to battle and tied the set at 12. Following the 12-12 tie, the Eagles took the lead and held on to take the third set. There were three lead changes, and the set was tied on eight different occasions.
Roberts had a set high four kills in the third set while LaFata had three kills for the Big Green. Five different players had a dig for the Big Green, Fitzgerald had a team high six, Gagnepain had four in the set. Gagnepain also notched a team high seven assists.
Set Four (L, 25-12)
Boston College took a 5-1 lead early in the set but the Big Green looked to claw back into the set. Dartmouth eventually tied the set at 10, 11, and 12 but Boston College went on a 13-0 lead to close the match.
LaFata notched three kills in the fourth set while Roberts had two. Kauany Gutz and Roberts each had a service ace in the set while Roberts also tallied three digs. Gagnepain had six assists in the set.
The Big Green were led by Roberts on the offensive side as she totaled 13 points on 12 kills and one ace. Dartmouth had seven aces which is the second most in a match this season. Gagnepain had 26 assists, it is the second time this season she had tallied 20 or more assists. Fitzgerald finished with four aces as Dartmouth had seven as a team, Fitzgerald's four aces is a career high.
Dartmouth closes tournament play with three matches next weekend in Philadelphia. Dartmouth takes on Quinnipiac on Friday, Sept. 19 at 4 PM. The Big Green then take on Presbyterian on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 4 PM. The final match of the weekend is against Temple on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 3 PM.
