PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The Dartmouth field hockey team traveled to Philadelphia to take on Penn in an Ivy League matchup on Friday. The Big Green fell 4-2 to the Quakers.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth quarter with neither team generating much offense. There were just three total shots with none of the three finding the goal. The quarter also did not see any penalty corners.
With 9:26 left in the second quarter, the Quakers opened the scoring to take a 1-0 lead.
The Big Green notched the only other shots on goal in the quarter. Dartmouth had two shots on goals in the quarter but could not find the back of the cage. Penn had the lone corner of the quarter.
After the halftime break, Dartmouth found the back of the net to tie the game at one. Florentina Terra stole the ball in the midfield and rushed towards the Penn circle. From just outside the circle, she fired a pass through the Penn defender to Amelie Luessmann who fired home her team leading fourth goal of the season.
Penn responded with a trio of goals in the frame including one with four seconds left in the quarter to take a 4-1 lead into the fourth.
Dartmouth had four shots in the third quarter with one finding the back of the goal.
1:26 into the fourth quarter, the Big Green got to within two. Ella Bowman had the ball on her stick with three defenders around her. Bowman fired the ball to Lucia Campano who was just inside the circle. Campano stickhandled to set up a good shooting angle and fired home her second goal of the season to make it 4-2.
Despite having four shots in the fourth quarter the Big Green could not complete a comeback as Penn held off the Big Green offense.
Ava Carlson started in net for the Big Green and faced just one shot on goal. Kylie McKinley was credited with five saves as she started the second half for the Big Green.
Luessmann and Campano each had two shots on goal while Riley Dumigan, Olivia Gailotos, and Bowman each tallied a shot on a goal.
Dartmouth closes a four-game road swing on Sunday, Sept. 28 as the Big Green take on Lafayette in a non-conference matchup. The match between the Big Green and Leopards is slated to start at Noon.
