PRINCETON, N.J. — The Dartmouth women's rowing team wrapped up a strong fall season on Saturday, highlighted by the Big Green's varsity eight finishing fourth out of 62 crews in the women's open eight.
"It's my third year coming down to the Chase with the team and we've always used it as an end of the fall flat water benchmark against some really good teams," said
John Graves, The Elizabeth C. McNabb Head Coach of Women's Rowing. "I felt like each crew took a step forward, especially from where we were at the Charles. In the varsity in particular, they started in front of a really fast Virginia crew and did a nice job, particularly our coxswain MC Hadley, managing that and keeping the crew focused and in a good rhythm. They ended up ultimately putting together their best piece of the fall and something they can be really proud of."
Dartmouth's varsity eight posted a time of 14:13.302, good for fourth — only behind Princeton's A boat and a pair of Virginia boats.
The Big Green's 2V finished 13th overall (14:48.950), the 3V finished 24th (15:08.179) and the 4V finished 30th (15:24.374), respectively. This marks the first time all Dartmouth crews have finished in the top half of the event.
Each Dartmouth boat placed better than last year's Princeton Chase. Last season, the varsity eight also finished fourth, but this year, the crew was the third school to finish (behind boats from Princeton and Virginia).
"The last couple years coming down there, looking at Princeton and Rutgers and all these crews and wanting our team to gravitate towards that, it's cool to watch them do that year to year," said Graves. "We're hoping to close the gap and move the standard to that level."
Graves was also impressed by the work of the program's coxswains.
"Our coxswain group continues to be a really good strong point of the team," said Graves. "All four coxswains managed the races well and we're excited to see the standard in that group continue to rise."
With success at the Princeton Chase and Head of the Charles, the Big Green wrap up the fall in a strong position, looking to build on last season's NCAA Championship appearance.
"Every year is different, every team is a little bit different, but being in the mix with some teams that finished in the top 10 last year is definitely encouraging for us," said Graves. "Racing in that top 10 level at NCAAs is a big goal for us. It shows that the team is in the vicinity and makes us excited to get right back to work and keep building speed."
