NEW YORK, N.Y.—Dartmouth volleyball notched a three-set win over Columbia for the Big Green's first Ivy League win of the season.
Set One (W, 25-12)
Dartmouth took the first point of the match and the teams traded the first six points as the score was tied at three. Dartmouth then took a 5-3 lead after back-to-back aces from Kauany Gutz. The Big Green never let go of the lead despite Columbia burning both of their timeouts and took the set 25-12.
The Big Green had a hitting percentage of .429 in the opening set as they did not commit an attack error in the set. Maddie LaFata had a set high five kills while Emma Symon had three kills. The Big Green had five aces with Gutz and Zori Brown each having a pair, LaFata notched an ace as well. The trio of LaFata, Gutz, and EllaMae Fitzgerald each had three digs to start the match. There was just one block in the set as Symon had a solo block.
Set Two (W, 26-24)
Dartmouth held the lead for most of the first set, but the second set was it was Columbia who took an early lead. The Lions had a 15-9 lead before the media timeout, out of the stoppage, Dartmouth took four the next five points which forced a Columbia timeout. The timeout did not faze the Big Green as they quickly tied the set at 16. Dartmouth took the lead and held it at 21-19 which led to a second Columbia timeout. The teams kept battling and the set was tied at 24-24 which led to Dartmouth calling timeout. After the timeout, Dartmouth took the final two points of the set to win the set.
The Big Green had 12 kills in the set with Molly Power leading the way with four kills for the Big Green. Gutz had a trio of kills while Brown, and LaFata each had two kills. Both Sophia Gagnepain and Gutz had six digs in the set while Fitzgerald had four. The Big Green had two blocks with Riley Imamura teaming up with Symon and Power for a pair of block assists. Gagnepain had a set high eight assists for Dartmouth.
Set Three (W, 30-28)
Dartmouth and Columbia battled through a third set that saw 58 points, 14 ties, and five lead changes. After 20 points the set was tied at 10 and then it was tied at 15 after 30 points. The ties continued at 20, 22, 24,25,26, 27, and 28. After the 28-28 tie, Dartmouth called timeouts. Out of the timeout, Gutz had a kill and the duo of Symon and LaFata closed out the match with a block.
Gutz hit .385 in the third set with a set high six kills, Brown was right behind her with five kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Power, LaFata, and Symon each had two kills in the set. Gagnepain had 14 of Dartmouth's 17 assists in the set. Dartmouth also tallied five blocks, Symon had four block assists while Gutz had two, Imamura, Brown, Power, and LaFata each had one block assist. Brown had seven digs in the set while Gutz had five. As a team, Dartmouth hit .289 in the third set.
Dartmouth spread the offense around as five players had kills, Gutz led the way with 11 kills, LaFata had nine, Brown notched eight, Power tallied seven, and Symon had six kills. Gagnepain notched 28 assists, it is the sixth time this season she's had 20 or more assists. Dartmouth had a season high 12 service aces, both Brown and Gutz had four aces while LaFata notched a pair and Fitzgerald and Gagnepain had one each. Kutz tallied her third double doubles of the year with 11 kills and 14 digs.
The Big Green have now defeated Columbia in 10 straight matches dating back to the 2019 season.
Dartmouth travels to Ithaca, N.Y. for a matchup with the Cornell Big Red on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 6 PM.
