HANOVER, N.H. – The Big Green welcomed the Penn Quakers to Burnham Field Saturday, looking for three straight wins in Ivy League play.
The two teams played an evenly matched first half, but the Quakers netted two goals in the final 23 minutes to earn the 2-0 victory over the Big Green. With the loss, Dartmouth falls to 3-6-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
In the first half of Saturday's game, Penn had a slight offensive advantage, but the statistics were nearly even and the score remained knotted at zero.
The Quakers took five shots, three on goal, all of which were saved by the Big Green keeper
Konstantinos Dellas. The Big Green attempted four shots, but only one found its way through to the Quakers keeper.
Penn drew four corners in the first 45 minutes, but the Big Green defense held strong, keeping the Quakers of the board.
The two teams continued to battle in the second half, but Penn found the go-ahead goal first. The Quakers attempted ten shots in the final 45 minutes, finally taking the lead in the 68
th minute. Not even four minutes later, the Quakers doubled their lead, making it a 2-0 game.
Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer
Bo Oshoniyi said his team had its chances, but they need to continue to be competitive.
"I thought we competed in the first half, and I would say quarters of the second half a little bit," Oshoniyi said. "We talk about something called competitive stamina. And I think Penn had that for 90 minutes. For you to be a tournament team, for you to be the top four in the Ivies, you have to have that for longer stretches of time. In the first half, we had a couple of chances, didn't get those goals and left them in the game, and then they were able to capitalize."
As Oshoniyi talks about being a top four team in the Ivy League, the Big Green will shift their focus and begin preparation to take on Princeton in their final regular season road game next weekend. Princeton currently sits atop the conference standings at 5-0.
Oshoniyi's focus for the Big Green; "Be competitive for 90 minutes. We're going to play against a really good Princeton team at Princeton. We just have to make sure we are competitive, we're all on the same page for 90 minutes. And I think if we do that, we give ourselves a great shot to get a win."
Kickoff next Saturday, November 1 is set for 4 p.m. You can watch the game on ESPN+ or follow the live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
