GREENVILLE, S.C. — The five Dartmouth golfers sank 15 more birdies in the second round of the Furman Invitational as the Big Green ended the day with a 14-over 298, but fell three spots in the overall standings to 10th of 21 teams at 22-over par (590). Senior
John Lazor, and sophomores
Jason Liu and
Sam Ohno all carded a 3-over 74, while sophomore
James Turner remains the Dartmouth leader overall at 3-over par (145).
Ohno navigated the par-72, 6,984-yard Furman University Golf Course in consistent fashion for the second straight day. After dropping a tournament-high 16 pars in the first round, he added 13 more today along with his first birdie. His 74 left him at 5-over par (147) for the first two rounds, tying him for 38th, while his 29 pars are three more than any other entrant.
The other four competing for the Big Green team all had much more volatile rounds, each sinking at least three birdies while suffering at least one double bogey. Liu birdied the first two holes, made it to the turn at 1-over par, added two more birdies through 15 to get back to even before a double and a bogey on 16 and 17 left him at 3-over for the day and 9-over (151) overall, tied for 70th in the 120-player field.
Lazor also enjoyed four birdies in his round and, like Liu, was even through 15 holes only to suffer a bogey and a double on the next two before closing with a par to end up with his 74, leaving him tied with Ohno with a 147 (+5).
Turner entered the day tied atop the leaderboard at 2-under par. His strong play continued through the first 11 holes with three birdies and only one bogey to drop to 4-under. But back-to-back double bogeys sabotaged his round as he lost seven strokes over the last seven holes to complete his round with a 5-over 76.
Turner's younger brother, Mark, also sank three birdies and wrapped his day with a 7-over 78 and 13-over for the two rounds.
Coastal Carolina took over the team lead by playing Saturday's round at 5-under par, led by Wes Artac who posted a 7-under 64 thanks to eight birdies. But Artac wasn't even the day's best golfer as Furman's Keller Harper matched the course record with an 8-under 63 featuring 10 pars and eight birdies. The two are tied for the lead at 9-under with 18 to play, seven strokes ahead of three others, one from Coastal Carolina and two from Davidson as both schools are tied for second, six strokes behind the Chanticleers.
The final round will tee off at 9 a.m. on Sunday with a shotgun start.
