HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's tennis team concluded its four-match homestand with a 6-1 loss to South Carolina at the Boss Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. The Big Green are now 2-2 overall, while the Gamecocks are undefeated with a 3-0 mark.
“South Carolina came out strong and fast in doubles,” head coach Chris Drake said after the match. “They put us on our heels right away. We did a good job changing the momentum at the onset of singles on the majority of the courts, but couldn't quite sustain our good level as the match went on.”
Wins at the No. 2 and 3 doubles positions – both by scores of 6-2 – gave the first point of the day to the Gamecocks. The score was close at the No. 1 spot, as senior Diego Pedraza and sophomore Roko Glasnovic were trailing, 4-3, but the match went unfinished.
South Carolina made it 2-0 with a win at the No. 2 singles positions, but a 6-1, 6-2 victory by freshman David Horneffer over Thomas Mayronne at the No. 3 spot slightly closed the gap. That was the only point the Gamecocks allowed, though, and they ended the match with wins at the No. 6 and 5 positions. Junior Ciro Riccardi and freshman Charlie Broom had incredibly close matches, but both dropped the tiebreaker.
Next weekend, the Big Green will play two matches on the road. On Friday, Dartmouth will face Minnesota before taking on Iowa on Sunday.
