Wilson Handler (Weston, Conn.) scored three goals for Dartmouth as the Big Green men's lacrosse team nearly shocked No. 4 Virginia, dropping a 10-9 decision Saturday afternoon.
With 4:45 remaining on the clock, freshman
Ari Sussman (New Haven, Conn.) scored an unassisted goal, giving Dartmouth a 9-8 lead.
But 19 seconds later, the Cavaliers' Jack Riley got the equalizer, and Danny Glading had a man-down goal with 1:28 to go, as Virginia (11-2) avoided the upset.
The Big Green (4-7) hung tough with the Cavaliers throughout. Dartmouth took a 2-1 lead after one period when Handler and sophomore
Brian Koch (Rye, N.Y.) sandwiched goals around one by Virginia's Ben Rubeor.
The Cavs scored the next five, building a 6-2 lead with 13:47 to go in the third. But the Big Green answered with six of the next seven.
With Virginia leading, 7-6, at the start of the fourth quarter, Handler got his third on the man-up to deadlock the score at 7-7, and senior
Nick Bonacci (Crofton, Md.) netted his second of the day for an 8-7 lead at 7:39.
Less than two minutes later, UVA's Drew Thompson made it 8-8, before Sussman answered.
In the goal, freshman
Michael Novosel (Somers, N.Y.) had an outstanding afternoon for the Big Green, making 14 saves.
Dartmouth returns to action on Tuesday, April 24, traveling to No. 3 Albany.
