POTSDAM, N.Y. – Dartmouth women's hockey wrapped its North Country road trip Saturday, taking on the No. 9 Clarkson Golden Knights. The Golden Knights outshot the Big Green early, but Dartmouth found its legs going on to score three goals in the final period to defeat Clarkson, 3-0.
With the win, Dartmouth moves to 2-4 on the season and 2-2 in ECAC Hockey play. This is the first time the Big Green have defeated the Golden Knights since 2019 and their first win at Cheel Arena since 2011.
The Golden Knights got out to a quick start, putting 16 shots on
Jiahui Zhan in the first period, but the sophomore goaltender was up to the task, stopping every shot that came her way.
The Big Green and Golden Knights played a more balanced second period, as Clarkson outshot Dartmouth 13-12 and each team registered multiple offensive chances. Through 40 minutes, the Big Green had hit the crossbar or post multiple times, but the game remained scoreless.
Dartmouth wasted no time getting on the board in the third period, scoring less than a minute in.
Miami Jones took a shot from the slot and
Hamilton Doster found the rebound loose in the crease, poking it past the Golden Knights' goaltender to give the Big Green a 1-0 lead.
"Between the second and third period, [Coach Crowell] talked to us a lot about the fact that we had a lot of solid opportunities… We knew we just needed to bury the first one," Doster said. "We made a really good play to net from
Miami Jones, and I just happened to be there and then we got the ice tilted in our direction, so the floodgates opened."
Just past the six-minute mark, the Big Green doubled their lead.
Mia Buonarosa played the puck on the wall to
Ella Inglis, who was left alone in front of the net. Her shot was saved but the rebound went right to
Shae Messner and popped up into the net to make it a 2-0 game.
With under six minutes to play, the Big Green struck again.
Sophia Chard picked up the puck in center ice, carried it into the offensive zone and beat a defender, scoring her first goal of the season to make it 3-0.
In the final five minutes, Dartmouth was sent to the power play, but Clarkson was able to draw a penalty of their own. The Golden Knights pulled their goalie, playing five-on-four and eventually six-on-four and six-on-five hockey, but the Big Green's defense held strong, securing the 3-0 win.
Zhan finished the day with 33 saves in the shutout and her first win of the season.
"It feels amazing. I'm really grateful for all of my teammates for playing in front of me," Zhan said. "They were hyping me up every single time at a faceoff and when I saved a great shot or even a not-so-great shot, they were like 'Great job. You got this.' So, this is not a win without them."
Head Coach
Maura Crowell echoed her goaltender, saying her team played together, and that Friday's game helped them prepare for Saturday.
"We were playing so well. I loved the way we played the first 40. Very similar to last night. I think last night helped us be better today in that last 20," Crowell said. "… Our players have the puck on their stick a little bit more, have time to make some plays offensively and they made plays, some beautiful ones out there. Collectively, it was great from the pipes out, I feel like everybody brought their best and good things happen when everybody plays together."
The Big Green will now shift their focus to next weekend, playing a home-and-home with the Harvard Crimson.
Doster said the biggest thing the team will take out of Saturday's win is momentum; "Coach always talks about how we're a very different team from last year and we have the skill to compete, and we definitely know we can take it to them," she said.
With the win being fresh, Crowell said her team has time to reflect, noting they will be ready to take on the Crimson.
"We just beat the top team in the ECAC so we're going to enjoy this one," Crowell said. "It just happened so we have a lot more time to reflect on how we did it and what we did and where we want to go. So again, another huge weekend coming up, just like every one in our league. So, we'll be ready."
Dartmouth will host the Harvard Crimson on Friday, November 7 at 3 p.m. at Thompson Arena before heading to Cambridge for a 3 p.m. puck drop on Saturday, November 8.
