HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's hockey opened ECAC Hockey play at Thompson Arena Friday, welcoming the No. 9/No. 8 Colgate Raiders to Hanover. The Big Green scored in each period, defeating the Raiders, 4-2.
With the win, the Big Green move to 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in ECAC Hockey play. Dating back to last season, Dartmouth has now defeated a ranked opponent in two of its last three opportunities.
Colgate opened the scoring just two minutes in, capitalizing on a power play to take a 1-0 lead over the Big Green. Just past the halfway mark of the first period,
Cally Dixon found the equalizer, also on the power play.
From behind the goal line, Dixon sent the puck to
Anne Averill at the dot, who fed it back to her down low. Dixon put the puck on net, and it squeaked through Colgate's goaltender, tying the game.
In the second period,
Shae Messner scored her first goal of the season, putting her team in front. She had two opportunities to bury the puck, first putting it on net with a backhand before finding the rebound and burying it to give the Big Green a 2-1 lead.
Dartmouth played with the lead into the third period, going up by two goals just over five minutes in.
Sydney Putrah collected the puck after a faceoff win from
Sophia Chard, sending it to net. The puck found its way in for her first career goal, giving Dartmouth a 3-1 lead.
Under a minute and a half later, Colgate responded in transition, making it a 3-2 game.
With just under two and a half minutes to play, the Raiders pulled their goalie, going on a six-on-five advantage. The Big Green were strong defensively, allowing only two shots and keeping the Raiders to the outside before Dixon forced the puck out of the zone and sunk the empty netter, sealing the 4-2 victory for the Big Green.
Head Coach
Maura Crowell said her team was much improved from last weekend's season opener, sticking to their plan. "We played the way we want to play. We were tough, we were fast, we kept it simple, and we made it hard on Colgate," Crowell said.
Crowell also acknowledged her goaltender, Michaela Hesová, describing her as outstanding.
Hesová had 34 saves on the night, including 17 in the final period to secure victory.
"I gotta give a huge shout out to all the players in front of me because they were hauling all over the ice, they were blocking shots, they made sure that sticks were picked up, clearing some of the rebounds that I couldn't get and they just played awesome," Hesová said about her and the team's performance.
The Big Green's special teams play also stood out, as Dartmouth killed off three of the four penalties they took and converted for its first power play goal of the season. Additionally, they killed off nearly two minutes of six-on-five Raiders pressure at the end of the game.
"We've been in those spots a ton, and they don't always go our way. So, figuring out how to withstand pressure against a talented team when they pull and playing with a lead for a long time, that was a long stretch that we had the lead," Crowell said. "Really proud of our group and certainly something to build off of."
Dartmouth women's hockey will return to action Saturday, hosting the No. 5/No. 4 Cornell Big Red.
"Tomorrow's a new day, and I want our players to really enjoy this one. This is a special way to open our home opener," Crowell said. "And then it's getting back at it, taking care of their bodies and not settling for one win on Friday. We want to do it again tomorrow."
Putrah, who scored the game winning goal, echoed her coach. "We just need to keep playing tough, fast and connected and be the toughest team to play against."
Puck drop on Saturday, October 25 is set for 3 p.m. You can purchase tickets to see the game live
