AMHERST, Mass. – The Dartmouth Big Green concluded nonconference play Tuesday, traveling to UMass for a match with the Minutemen. The two teams played an even first half, but Massachusetts came alive in the second half, scoring two goals to defeat the Big Green, 2-0.
With the loss, Dartmouth moves to 3-5-3 on the season, snapping its two-game win streak.
The Big Green had two quality scoring opportunities early, both off the foot of
Eidur Baldvinsson. Baldvinsson found himself behind the defense twice, poking one off the post and wide and another right into the Minutemen goalkeeper.
Outside of those two opportunities, the two teams played a balanced first half, nearly posting identical statistics. The Big Green and Minutemen each committed two fouls and drew two corners through the first 45 minutes. Dartmouth slightly outshot Massachusetts, tallying three shots to the Minutemen's two.
In the second half, the Minutemen subbed in most of their usual starters, and momentum started to shift in their direction. Massachusetts put four shots on net, before finally breaking through.
Matt McPherson got the start in net for the Big Green, and made the initial save in the 71
st minute. The rebound was loose, and Dartmouth left one man open, who corralled the ball and sent it past McPherson to take a 1-0 lead over the Big Green.
The Minutemen continued to pressure, drawing three more corners after taking the lead. Dartmouth held strong defensively, but Massachusetts was able to break through again on a long throw in the 82
nd minute, doubling its lead.
Dartmouth was unable to generate many offensive chances in the final eight minutes, ultimately falling to the Minutemen, 2-0.
In only his second career start, McPherson made ten saves in net for the Big Green, both a personal career high and a team high this season.
With nonconference play wrapped up, Dartmouth will shift its focus to the final stretch of Ivy League play. The Big Green will welcome Penn to Burnham Field on Saturday, looking to extend their conference win streak to three and maintain a spot in the top-four of the standings.
Kickoff Saturday, October 25 is set for 7 p.m. The game will be Youth Soccer Night – all youth that wear a soccer jersey to the game will receive free admission. You can purchase your tickets to see the Big Green live
