SHANGHAI, CHINA — Dartmouth men's heavyweight rowing alums Jacob Hudgins '24 and Billy Bender '25 won a bronze medal for the United States this past weekend at the World Rowing Championship as members of the eight. Bender was in the six seat, with Hudgins in the two seat, as Dartmouth made up one quarter of the rowers in the boat for the Red, White and Blue.
Â
The U.S. finished third in the grand final with a time of 5:30.09, only behind the Netherlands (5:27.67) and Great Britain (5:29.93), as the United States battled stroke for stroke with the reigning Olympic champion Great Britain. Behind the U.S. was Australia (5:34.77), Italy (5:35.88) and Poland (5:37.35).
Â
Last Thursday, the United States started by finishing second in its heat with a time of 5:46.36 to advance directly to the grand final.
"It means so much to represent Dartmouth on the world's stage with Billy," said Hudgins. "Go Big Green!"
Â
In their time with the Big Green, Bender was a four-time All-American, earning first-team distinction in each of his final three seasons. Hudgins was a three-time All-American (twice first team). Each had considerable experience with the U.S. rowing program, helping set the stage for this past weekend's success.
