CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Dartmouth volleyball fell to Harvard on Saturday, the Big Green took the first set but fell 3-1 to the Crimson.
Set One (W, 25-22)
The opening set saw seven ties and six lead changes as the teams' traded points and leads in the opening frame. It was the Big Green who won the first race to 10 as the Big Green had a 10-8 lead after the first 18 points. Harvard tied the set at 10 and the teams battled for the next 20 points as the score was tied at 20 after 40 points. Dartmouth took a 22-20 lead which led to a Havard timeout. The timeout did not phase the Big Green as they eventually took the set 25-20.
Both Kauany Gutz and Maddie LaFata had a team high three kills in the opening set while Dartmouth had a .226 hitting percentage. Raeli Smith and Emma Symon added a pair of kills to open the match while Zori Brown and Ava Roberts each had a kill. The Big Green had three aces in the opening set while Sophia Gagnepain had two in a row while Smith also notched an ace. Dartmouth had three blocks, Smith was involved in all three as she had a solo block and teamed up with Roberts and Brown once each for a block.
Set Two (L, 25-21)
Just like the opening set, the second set was full of ties and lead changes as there were 13 ties and seven lead changes in the set. After 20 points, the Big Green and Crimson were tied at 10 and the teams' traded points until the teams were tied at 16. Harvard took an 18-16 lead which led to a Dartmouth timeout. After a second Dartmouth with the score being 20-16, Harvard took the set 25-21.
The duo of Gutz and LaFata once again led the way for the Big Green as they each had five kills while Gutz hit .333 and LaFata .273. Brown added a pair of kills for Dartmouth while Roberts notched her second kill of the match. The duo of Smith and Roberts combined for the lone Dartmouth block. Ellie Mattox accounted for seven of Dartmouth's 13 assists, Sophia Gagnepain had five assists while Brown tallied an assist as well. Libero EllaMae Fitzgerald had four digs in the set.
Set Three (L, 25-9)
Harvard took the opening point of the set which was followed by Dartmouth tying the set at one. After a Dartmouth service error, the Crimson never looked back as they jumped out to a 10-4 lead which led to a Dartmouth timeout. Harvard continued to control the set as they built a 22-9 lead which led to Dartmouth's second timeout. Following the timeout, the Crimson closed the set by taking the last three points of the set.
LaFata had three kills in sets for Big Green while Gutz had two and Roberts one. Gagnepain had four assists for the Big Green while Roberts and Julia York each added one. Gutz notched three digs in the set while Julia Gojcaj had two, Mattox and Brown each added one.
Set Four (L, 25-22)
The fourth set was similar to the first two sets as there were seven ties in the set. The Big Green took an early 8-2 lead which led to a Harvard timeout. The Big Green held on to the lead as Harvard called its second timeout with Dartmouth leading 18-15. Out of the timeout, the Crimson tied the set at 20 which led to a Dartmouth timeout. Harvard took a 24-22 lead which forced a Dartmouth timeout. After the timeout, the Crimson closed out the match.
LaFata had a team best four kills in the fourth set as Gutz and Roberts each had three kills. Brown added a pair of kills while Symon tallied a kill. Both Mattox and Gagnepain had five assists while Mattox and Elle McCreery each had an ace in the set. McCreery had a pair of block assists while both Gutz and LaFata each had a block assist.
Dartmouth had 44 kills in the match with LaFata notching a Dartmouth best 15 kills, Gutz finished with 13 kills and 12 digs for a double double. Gutz also tallied her 700th career kill while LaFata notched her 500th career kill.
Gagnepain had 20 assists while Mattox tallied 16 assists. Nine different players had a dig for Dartmouth, Gagnepain was second on the team with eight digs while four members of the Big Green had five or more digs.
The Big Green return to Leede Arena for four straight matches to close out the home slate of matches starting on Halloween against Cornell. The Big Green and Big Red square off at 6 PM on Friday, Oct. 31.
