HANOVER, N.H. – Following a win over No. 9 Colgate on Friday, the Big Green returned to the ice at Thompson Arena, hosting the Cornell Big Red and looking to win their second straight game.
Cornell got two goals late in the first period, going on to tally five total to defeat the Big Green. With the loss, Dartmouth falls to 1-3 on the season and 1-1 in ECAC Hockey play.
Despite Cornell throwing shots on goal early in the game, the Big Green and Big Red were scoreless past the halfway mark of the first period. Just over 16 minutes in, Cornell broke the tie, taking a 1-0 lead.
Towards the end of the first period, Dartmouth took a penalty, sending Cornell to the power play. The Big Red converted with only nine seconds left in the period, taking a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Cornell continued to pressure through the second period, but Dartmouth's defense was up to the task. The Big Red got their third goal of the night with just over two minutes to play in the period, converting for their second power play goal of the night.
At the start of the third period, Cornell sent a shot from right inside the blue line on net. The puck found a way through Michaela Hesová who got the start, putting the Big Red up 4-0.
Just under two minutes later, the Big Red took advantage of another power play, going up 5-0 en route to a win over the Big Green.
Hesová made 31 saves through the first 40+ minutes, before giving way to
Jiahui Zhan to play most of the final period. Zhan made four saves in her 17:30 of play.
After the game, Head Coach
Maura Crowell said having Cornell and Colgate back-to-back is always tough, but her team got away from some of the plays that made them successful Friday against the Raiders.
"Obviously, we had a great Friday night, and we wanted a repeat performance today, but it's really hard work to do that," Crowell said. "Cornell came in, and they were ready to go. I thought we got away from some of the simple plays that helped us last night. Some habits, just some of our details, and they took advantage."
The Big Green will return to action next weekend, heading back on the road to North Country to take on St. Lawrence and Clarkson.
Crowell said despite the loss, Saturday's game was an important lesson for her team as they continue through the season.
"It's early in the season and this is a great lesson for us to learn that if we want to have success on Friday night, Saturday night, we have to be ready for a different style of play on Saturday, especially with different opponents," Crowell said. "You have to hone in on different things on Saturday and really pay attention to those details. I love that we learned that. I hate that we lose to learn it, but I think that's all part of the process."
Puck drop on Friday, October 31 against the St. Lawrence Saints is set for 3 p.m. You can watch the game on ESPN+ or follow the live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
