COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team opened the 2015 season on the road, falling to Ohio State by a score of 15-5 on Saturday afternoon.
Saturday's contest marked the first time the two teams have met since March 20, 2001, a game that the Buckeyes won, 14-10.
The Buckeyes (3-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead early on in the game, scoring 54 seconds into the first quarter and then again three and a half minutes later. At 10:27 and just 11 seconds after Ohio State's second goal, senior Phil Hession won the faceoff and scored an unassisted marker to put the Big Green (0-1) on the board with their first tally of the day and season. Junior Taylor Topousis tied the score at two with 8:43 remaining in the opening quarter.
Dartmouth played even with the Buckeyes in the early stages of the contest, allowing a goal by Turner Evans at 6:46, but then turning around to score one of its own at 3:03 as sophomore Don Stephan pulled the visitors even, once again, at 3-3 as the first period of play came to an end.
Both goalies were on point and allowed just three combined goals in the second with sophomore Jack McCormick finding the back of the net at 3:32 for Dartmouth's lone tally to tie things up at 4-4.
A late goal in the final seconds of the first half gave Ohio State a one-goal lead going into the intermission. The home team built that lead with six third-quarter goals, while not allowing the Green a marker in the frame.
With an 11-4 lead, it was not until the opening minutes of the fourth quarter that the Buckeyes allowed another goal, Stephan's second of the day was Dartmouth's final goal of the afternoon, while OSU managed four more before the game's conclusion.
Junior Blair Friedensohn and senior Colin Heffernan both saw time between the pipes. Friedensohn was tagged with the loss, posting six saves and 11 goals allowed, while Heffernan stopped three shots and allowed four markers. Stephan led the Big Green with two goals and one assist for three points.
With its first game under its belt, Dartmouth will return to the field on Saturday, Feb. 28, when it faces No. 2 Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, at 1 p.m.
