PRINCETON, N.J. - Dartmouth sophomore goalkeeper Kristen Giovanniello (Old Brookville, N.Y.) was named the Ivy League Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
The second-year keeper was honored after her performance against Yale Saturday in the Ivy League and home opener.
Giovanniello made seven saves and had a game-high four ground balls in helping her team defeat the Bulldogs, 9-8. Her seven saves were a season high and the most since stopping 11 and upsetting then-No. 1 Maryland in Hanover last May.
With the score tied at 8-8, Giovanniello came up big in goal for the Big Green, holding Yale off the scoreboard for the final 12-plus minutes of play to give her teammates the opportunity to score the winner. Senior Sarah Plumb (Wellesley, Mass.) did just that with 2:12 remaining in regulation
The sophomore improved to 2-0 this season with wins over in-state rival UNH and the Elis.
As a freshman in 2011, Giovanniello was named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week three times.
Plumb was named the weekly honor roll for her six goals (including the game-winner), four draw controls and three caused turnovers.
Giovanniello and the rest of the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team will be back in action Wednesday at 3 p.m. against Boston University at Scully-Fahey Field.
