HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team scored a season-high 11 goals in its home opener to beat Sacred Heart on Saturday, 11-10.
Junior Chris Costabile (Sykesville, Md.) and senior Drew Tunney (Greenwich, Conn.) stole the show for the Big Green, combining for 16 points. Costabile had seven goals and Tunney scored three goals and added six assists. All six of Tunney's assists came on goals by Costabile.
SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
Dartmouth is 2-0 and hosts Bellarmine on Tuesday at Scully-Fahey Field.
Through two games, the team has had eight players record a point and three with a goal and an assist. Tunney leads the team in points with 12 on five goals and seven assists. Costabile is second with eight goals for eight points. Sophomore Mike Olentine (Princeton, N.J.) is third with five points on two goals and three assists. Junior Nikki Dysenchuk (Darien, Conn.) is fourth with two goals and one assist for three points. Freshman Brendan Rotanz (Westport, Conn.) has two points on two goals and is in fifth. Three Dartmouth players have one point on the season. Sophomore Patrick Resch (Flourtown, Pa.) has one goal, senior Colin Delaney (Darien, Conn.) has one assist and junior JP Garry (Mamroneck, N.Y.) has one assist.
Senior Fergus Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.) has played all 120 minutes for Dartmouth this season. He has an 8.00 goals against average, a 2-0 record, 20 saves and a .556 save percentage.
The team is averaging 10.00 goals per game, while allowing 8.00 goals against. The Big Green take 35.5 shots per game and grab 31.50 ground balls per game. The team is 1-for-7 in man-up situations for a conversion rate of 14.3 percent.
LUCKY NUMBER 7
Costabile did something on Saturday that no Dartmouth player had done in over six years. With his seven goals, Costabile was the first Big Green player to score that many times since Jamie Coffin '06 had seven against Providence on Feb. 26, 2006. Costabile only needed 11 shots to reach his goal total.
The all-time record for Dartmouth in one game is nine goals done four different times. The last time a player scored eight goals in a game was by Jeff Hickey '79 against Williams in 1979.
HIGH POINT MAN
Even though Costabile had seven points in the victory, Tunney left the game with the most points for the Big Green. Tunney finished with three goals and six assists.
The nine points are the most by a Dartmouth player since Josh Etzion '11 had nine against Wagner on March 11, 2010. Tunney became the first to tally six assists in a game since Ari Sussman '10 had six against Harvard on May 3, 2008.
T & C CONNECTION
The duo of Tunney and Costabile proved to be quite the combo on Saturday. On six of Costabile's seven goals, Tunney was the one who made the pass to set up the score. The Tunney and Costabile assist-to-goal combination happened once in the first, three times in the second, once in the third and once in the fourth quarter.
FIRST CAREER POINT
Early in the first quarter of the win on Saturday, Garry recorded his first collegiate point. With 8:10 remaining in the opening stanza, Garry made a pass to Tunney who scored to give the Big Green a 2-1 advantage. The first point and assist came in Garry's fifth career game for the Big Green. The junior missed his entire freshman season due to injury, and then only appeared in three games last season due to another injury.
POINT STREAK
Costabile currently has the longest point streak for Dartmouth at four games. He registered a point in each of the Big Green's final two games last season and opened this year with a goal at Colgate on Feb. 25. He continued the streak on Saturday against Sacred Heart with his seven goals.
TWO WINS TO START THE YEAR
For the first time in six years, the men's lacrosse team started the season with two victories. The last time the Big Green went 2-0 to start the year was in 2006 when they won their first three games. Dartmouth finished 8-7 that season.
NIFTY FIFTY
Costabile eclipsed the 50-point plateau on Saturday with his seven goals. He entered the contest with 44 career points and the seven scores moved him to 51 in his career. In 27 career games, he has 41 goals and 10 assists.
SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS
Bellarmine enters the weekend with a 1-2 record overall. The Knights lost their first game of the season at home, 9-8, to Robert Morris. The team then earned a 13-5 victory at Mercer, and last weekend lost its opening ECAC game to Loyola, 11-8.
Senior Colton Clark leads the team in points with 13 on six goals and a team-high seven assists. Junior Michael Ward is second with a team-best seven goals for seven points. The Knights have three players tied for third with four points.
Junior Dillon Ward started all three games for Bellarmine at goalkeeper. In 177:25 minutes, he has an 8.45 goals against average, 36 saves, a .590 save percentage and a 1-2 record.
The Knights average 9.67 goals per game, while allowing 8.33 goals against. The team takes 31.0 shots per game, and is 5-for-6 in man-up situations for a 83.3 percent conversion rate.
