DANBURY, CONN. —The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team took the lead early in the opening quarter against 19th-ranked Delaware on Tuesday, but the Blue Hens took the lead late in the first and held on for a 14-11 victory. The neutral-site contest was played at Western Connecticut State. The Big Green fell to 4-6 on the season and are 1-2 in the Ivy League. Delaware improved to 8-4 overall.
After falling behind 10-6 early in the third quarter, Dartmouth scored five of the next seven goals to get within one with 9:43 left in the game. The Blue Hens withstood the charge by the Big Green and scored the final two goals to push the game out of reach, 14-11.
Dartmouth took the lead twice in the first quarter, but the goals marked the only times the team led in the entire game. Junior Kip Dooley (Minneapolis, Minn.) scored the first goal 1:08 in the contest, and junior Drew Tunney (Greenwich, Conn.) gave the Big Green a 2-1 lead with 7:18 left in the first. Unfortunately, Nick Diachenko and the rest of the Blue Hens' offense controlled the game. Diachenko had a career-high four goals to pace Delaware, which had nine different players record a goal.
Sophomore Nikki Dysenchuk (Darien, Conn.) scored the most goals for the Big Green with three. He now has 15 goals on the season. Tunney led the team in points with five on a career-high four assists and a goal.
Junior Fergus Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.) finished the game with 14 saves. It is the second-straight game he has made at least 14 stops. The Big Green went 0-for-6 in man-up situations, while the Blue Hens went 2-for-7. Dartmouth did score its fourth man-down goal of the season. Delaware took more shots in the game, 39-38.
Dartmouth plays another neutral-site contest on Satuday against Princeton at Gillette Stadium as part of the New England Lacrosse Classic. The game will be at 6:30 p.m.
