HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's hockey team hung tough for two periods, but New Hampshire netted two third period goals to pull away for the 3-1 victory over the Big Green on Thursday night in non-conference action at Thompson Arena.
New Hampshire (20-3-0, 10-0-0 Hockey East) broke the ice with Dartmouth on a goal by Sam Faber on a penalty shot seven minutes into the contest. The Big Green was called for delaying the game as a defenseman covered the puck in the crease during a scrum which resulted in the penalty shot.
Dartmouth (11-6-2, 8-4-1 ECAC Hockey) would even the score with 5:12 remaining in the opening period when junior Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.) sent the face-off back to classmate Julia Bronson (Arlington, Va.), who mishit her slapshot, but the puck trickled through the legs of UNH goaltender Kayley Herman. It was Bronson's second of the season.
After a scoreless second period, New Hampshire took the lead on Faber's second of the night that gave the Wildcats a 2-1 advantage. Faber received a pass from Nicole Goguen and skated to the right circle and lifted a shot off the glove of junior netminder Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) and into the back of the net.
Just over four minutes later New Hampshire added an insurance goal as Jennifer Hitchcock connected on her 11th of the season. Sadie Wright-Ward sat behind the net and feathered a pass to Hitchcock, who was above the crease, and she drove it home to give the Wildcats the 3-1 win.
Dartmouth had its opportunities down the stretch as the Big Green had multiple power plays win the final 10 minutes of play, included a 5-on-3 advantage for at least a minute and could not capitalized. Dartmouth struggled on the power play throughout the game with no scores in seven chances.
The Wildcats also struggle on the man advantage with no goals in five of their own chances in the game. New Hampshire posted a 26-23 edge in shots, while the teams combined for 13 penalties for 26 minutes.
Clemis made 23 saves on the night, including a pair of double-digit periods with 11 coming in the second and 10 in the third. Herman improved to 18-2-0 on the season, pushing aside 22 shots with 12 stops coming in the final stanza.
The Big Green will be back on the road this coming Sunday as Dartmouth faces another Hockey East foe in Boston College. Face-off between the Big Green and the Eagles is set for 8 p.m. at Kelley Rink.
