College Park, Md. - After seven shot attempts, Maryland's Nataly Arias hit the jackpot with less than a minute remaining in the second and final overtime period to give her team a 1-0 victory over the Dartmouth women's soccer team tonight.
Dartmouth held tight for 109 minutes and was just seconds away from earning a draw when the Terrapins capitalized on a corner kick to take the win.
The young Big Green, who falls to 1-4 with the loss, had hoped a tie could be a turning point but still took positives away from the near miss. The Terps improve to 3-1-1 and certainly had plenty of motivation in the contest after losing to Dartmouth, 1-0 in Hanover last season.
“We are getting there,” said Head Coach Angie Hind. “We competed but to battle so hard and give so much and lose that way is pretty disappointing.”
The two teams played a relatively even first half in very rainy conditions. Maryland held a 6-3 shot advantage but Dartmouth took 3 corners to the Terps' 2.
Maryland came out on fire in the second half, but Dartmouth goalkeepr Laurel Peak (Redding, Conn.) responded well by making several big saves in the early going.
Myra Sack (Wynnewood, Pa.) sparked the Dartmouth attack with two shots on goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation and rookie Peyton Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) had a shot go just wide late and the teams headed to overtime.
The Big Green held a 3-1 advantage in the first overtime period, with the best attempt coming early by Tata, forcing Maryland goalkeeper Yewande Balogun to make her seventh save of the game. Dartmouth survived a scare in the last 10 seconds of the period when Mary Casey took a header off a free-kick attempt close to the goal. Peak reacted quickly to the shot and made a big save to force another overtime period.
It was all Maryland in the final overtime period and Peak and the Big Green defense came up big several times. In a frenzied two minute period, the Terps had one shot saved, one go just wide and one hit the post.
The Terps earned a corner kick late in the 108th minute and Kalia Sciascia sent a cross into the box for Arias, who headed it past Peak in the corner at 109:09.
Peak finished with eight saves while Sack paced the offense with three shots.
“Laurel had a few really big time saves to keep us in the game and our defense, especially Emily Forline (Bethesda, Md.), Ali Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass.), Whitney Odden (Bozeman, Mont.), and Annie Stanley (Winnetka, Ill.) played an outstanding game,” said Hind. “Our next challenge will be getting ourselves ready physically and mentally for Duke on Sunday and we'll get the team as prepared as we can.”
Dartmouth heads to Durham to face the Blue Devils at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
