With 2:22 left in regulation the Harvard Crimson (6-6,3-3) tied things up for the first time all night but in the third overtime it was the Big Green that prevailed as Dartmouth defeated Harvard, 14-13 in the final regular season contest for both teams.
Dartmouth took a 9-5 lead into halftime after scoring five goals in the first and four in the second. Harvard roared back with five goals in third and three in the fourth.
Brad Heritage (Cheshire, Conn.) led the Big Green with three goals and one assist while freshman Brian Koch (Rye, N.Y.) had one goal and three assists.
Koch was the hero of the night notching the game winner 26 seconds into the third extra stanza. Koch picked up a rebound of Heritage's initial shot and tucked it past Harvard goalie Joe Pike after Dartmouth's Ben Lovejoy (Orford, N.H.) won the faceoff to start the third sudden-death period. It was just the fifth faceoff win of the game for the Big Green.
Dartmouth netminder Pat Marshall (Lutherville, Md.) recorded 23 saves. Harvard outshot Dartmouth 73-36 and collected 41 ground balls to the Big Green's 21.
Harvard went up quickly in the contest taking a 2-0 lead but five straight Big Green goals gave Dartmouth the 5-2 lead after one quarter. The Crimson scored first in the second before the Big Green scored two more to take a 7-3 lead. Each team scored two more the half.
Harvard quickly pulled within one midway through the third but Dartmouth was able to maintain its lead until the fourth when the Crimson tied the game at 12-12 and then again at 13-13.
Tim Daniels (Duxbury, Mass.), Jamie Coffin (Greenwich, Conn.), Nick Bonacci (Crofton, Md.), Ryan Danehy (N. Billerica, Mass.), Doug Rendall (Langhorne, Pa.), Lovejoy, Alec Hufnagel (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and Gavin Phillips (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) all scored goals for the Big Green while Bonacci, Coffin, Heritage and Ryan Orr (Great Falls, Va.) all had assists.
Dartmouth ends its season with an 8-7 overall record, 3-3 in the Ivy League.
