Being able to work hard, compete with friends and be successful is what Dartmouth Lacrosse is all about. It is also what the Upper Valley Special Olympics entails.
For the last four years, senior captain Ben Grinnell has been fortunate enough be a Special Olympics Coach. Every Tuesday, Grinnell coaches athletes in the finer points of bowling at Upper Valley Lanes and Games in White River Junction, Vt. Coaching entails not merely providing instruction, but also motivation and cheerleading. The rewards are duly reciprocal. Grinnell notes, "The athletes are remarkable and inspiring. I look forward to Tuesday because I know I am going to see smiling faces and athletes competing to the best of their abilities."
Over the four years, other Dartmouth lacrosse players have come to give a helping hand, notably fellow seniors Brandon Wright and Pat Keeley. Just last weekend, Wright and Grinnell traveled up to Montpelier, Vermont for The Northern New England Special Olympics Bowling Tournament, where the teams both coached won medals.
"School, lacrosse, Special Olympics, and the friends that each have provided is how I define my Dartmouth experience. Hopefully, the tradition of a connection between Dartmouth Lacrosse and Special Olympics will continue after my class graduates. Leaving that legacy would really mean a lot."
