CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Dartmouth women's rowing team enjoyed a strong effort at the 60th Head of the Charles regatta this weekend, with the club eight capturing silver, the championship eight earning 10th and all four crews earning a top-11 finish.
The Head of the Charles is a three-mile, 4,800 meter course which features a number of turns. It is completed in a time trial format. Overall Dartmouth rowing (men's heavyweight and men's lightweight and women's) finished second in overall team points for the MacMahon Cup at the weekend's Head of the Charles, second to only Princeton and ahead of Harvard.
"The club eight getting silver was awesome," said
John Graves, The Elizabeth C. McNabb Head Coach of Women's Rowing. "They led all the way down the course and just got nipped by Yale by half a second at the end. That was pretty cool and pretty special for them to be up there fighting for the lead with Yale, who were NCAA Champions last year.
"The championship eight being top 10 is really cool and one of the best program finishes [at Head of the Charles] in a long time," Graves continued. "Really proud of them."
In the club eights, the Big Green posted a time of 16:15.112, less than one second behind Yale's time of 16:14.664. In the championship eights, Dartmouth posted a time of 16:06.000, good for 10th as the fifth crew to finish in the college championship division.
Meanwhile, the club four also finished seventh overall (18:31.083) out of 53 crews and the championship four placed 11th (17:54.356) of 22.
"I was really impressed with our coxswains," said Graves. "All of our coxswains really performed well. It really is a coxswains race (with all the turns) and they all performed at a really high level. Really proud of their preparation and execution."
The Big Green wrap up the fall season when they travel to the Princeton Chase, set for Sunday, Nov. 2.
"We start really late compared to a lot of other schools (with the later start to the school year at Dartmouth)," said Graves. "I'm really proud of where the group is right now and excited to keep building. We definitely see this as a starting point for the year. We just have to keep progressing, but there's definitely a lot of good stuff happening as a team.
"The Charles is an amazing event," Graves continued. "You don't want to put too much stock in results, good or bad, because of how much turning there is, but I'm proud of the way the crews raced and how they carried themselves. Excited to see if we can go a little faster in a couple weeks."
