HANOVER, N.H. – This past weekend, the Dartmouth sailing team was busy, competing in the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship as well as hosting the Captain Hurst Trophy at Michels Boathouse.
On the Charles River, the Big Green raced to a podium finish, earning third place in the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship with 164 total points. The A Division posted the second-best score with 76 total points, while the B Division had the fourth best score, 88 points.
The Big Green got out to a slow start, finishing tenth in their first race. A sixth place finishing position in the first B Division race followed by fourth in the second A Division race jumped Dartmouth into third.
Over the next six races, the two divisions combined for all top ten finishes, half in the top five, and caped with a first-place finish in the fourth B Division race to sit comfortable in second place. Dartmouth capped day one of racing with 12th, third, and 11th place finishes to remain in second place through 12 total races.
16 races were sailed between the two divisions on Sunday. The Big Green kicked off the day with a first place A Division finish. After a 13th place finishing position in the first B Division race of the day, Dartmouth posted top ten finishing positions in the remaining 14 races.
The Big Green had two back-to-back tenth place finishes in the tenth set of races but eight of the final 14 races were top ten finishes. Each division's best finish over that stretch was second place, as the A Division earned second three times in their ninth, 12th, and 14th race while the B Division posted a second-place finishing position in their ninth race to help Dartmouth to a third-place overall finish.
Stanford won the Atlantic Coast Coast Championship with 136 total points, followed by Harvard (152) and then the Big Green (164). Dartmouth beat the fourth place Brown Bears by 34 points.
On Lake Mascoma, the Big Green hosted the 34th Captain Hurst Bowl, sailing to a fourth-place finish with 75 total points. The A Division's 37 points were fourth best in the regatta while the B Division's 38 points were tied for fifth best. There was no wind on Saturday, meaning the Big Green had to sail 14 races between the two divisions on Sunday.
In its 14 races, Dartmouth finished 12 races in the top ten, seven of which were also in the top five. The Big Green started the regatta with three straight first place finishes.
The B Division posted a fourth place finishing position in their second race before the A Division finished just outside the top ten in their third race, leaving the door open for the B Division to post their second first place finishing position in their third race.
Over the final eight races, the Big Green finished outside the top ten just once to earn fourth place overall.
Dartmouth will return to action next week for the seventh weekend of the fall season, competing at three regattas. The weekend will be highlighted by the Open Atlantic Coast Championship hosted by Navy. The Big Green will also compete at the Yale Women's and the Oberg Trophy hosted by MIT.
