HANOVER, N.H.—Dartmouth volleyball hosted Penn on Saturday to close out homecoming weekend. Dartmouth defeated Penn in five sets to close out the weekend at Leede Arena.
Set One (L, 25-21)
The first set saw three ties and one lead change as the Quakers took the opening set. After 18 points the teams were tied at nine as each team looked to take an early lead. After the 9-9 tie, Penn took four of the next five points to take a 13-10 lead and force a Dartmouth timeout. Out of the timeout, Penn got out to 20-17 lead which forced a second Dartmouth timeout. Dartmouth looked for a comeback but come not overcome the three-point deficit as the Big Green fell 25-21.
The Big Green came out swinging as they hit .289 as a team in the first set, Kauany Gutz, Zori Brown, and Molly Power each hit over .300 in the set., Gutz had five kills while Brown and Power each had three kills. Sophia Gagnepain had seven of Dartmouth's 12 assists while Ellie Mattox had three and EllaMae Fitzgerald had two. Gutz had a team high five digs while Brown and Fitzgerald each had four digs. Emma Symon teamed up with Brown and Raeli Smith for a pair of blocks in the set.
Set Two (W, 27-25)
The Big Green and Quakers battled for 52 points in the second set as there were 10 ties and five lead changes. The two teams battled for the first 20 points as Dartmouth held an 11-9 lead after Penn called its first timeout. The teams continued to battle, and Dartmouth held its two point lead until it was 17-15 and Penn burned its second timeout. After the timeout, both teams traded points until it was 25-25. The Big Green used a Penn service error and an ace from Gutz to win the second set and tie the match at one set each.
Dartmouth had just nine kills in the set as they had five service aces and five total blocks. Maddie LaFata had three kills in the set while both Power and Smith had two kills. Symon and Gutz each had a kill as well for Dartmouth. Brown and Gutz each had a pair of aces for the Big Green, Sophia Gagnepain had one ace for Dartmouth. Smith led the way in the block category as she had two solo blocks and a block assist. Brown also had a solo block while Symon, Gutz, Power, and LaFata each had a block assist. Eight different players had a dig for Dartmouth in the set with Gutz and Fitzgerald each having six each.
Set Three (W, 25-21)
Dartmouth controlled the third set for nearly the whole set as there was just one tie and no lead changes. The Big Green took an early 4-1 lead, but Penn tied the set at five after 10 points. Following the tie, the Big Green took an 11-8 lead which led to a Penn timeout. The timeout did not affect the Big Green as they led 14-9 which forced Penn to call its second timeout early in the third set. Penn responded out of the timeout, but Dartmouth still held an 18-14 lead when Dartmouth took a timeout. Dartmouth closed out the set on a Brown kill to take a crucial 2-1 set lead.
Dartmouth notched 17 kills in the third set as the trio of Symon, Brown, and Gutz each had four kills. Power and LaFata had two kills each while Smith also had a kill. Gagnepain had nine assists in the set while Mattox had six for the Big Green, Gutz and Fitzgerald also each had an assist. The Big Green tallied three blocks as Brown had a solo block and a block assist, Power had a pair of block assists while Smith notched one. Gutz turned in a set high nine digs in the third set.
Set Four (L, 25-19)
The two teams once again battled in the fourth set as Dartmouth looked to close out the match but Penn wasn't going down without a fight. The teams battled through the first 27 points as the media timeout came, and Penn had a 15-12 lead. Out of the media break, Penn took the next three points which led to a Dartmouth timeout. Dartmouth gave the Quakers all they could handle in the late stages of the set, but Penn took the set 25-19 to force a fifth set.
Dartmouth hit .286 in the fourth set as Brown had a team high four kills in. Gutz had three kills while Symon notched a pair, Smith, Power and Gagnepain each had a kill as well. Gagnepain had seven assists in the set while Mattox notched four assists. The duo of LaFata and Power teamed up for the lone Dartmouth block of the set.
Set Five (W, 15-13)
The Quakers took the first two points of the set and held the lead for the first 21 points. They led 8-6 at the media timeout and then kept that lead until Dartmouth called a timeout with the score being 10-8. Out of the timeout, the Big Green took three of the next four points to tie the set at 11. After a Julia Gojcaj ace gave Dartmouth a 12-11 lead, Penn took its second timeout. The teams kept fighting until the duo of Symon and Smith came up with a block to end the match.
Gutz had three kills in the fifth set while Smith and Power each had two kills. Dartmouth had three blocks in the set with both Symon and LaFata having two block assists each. Smith and Power each had a block assist as well. Gojcaj and Gagnepain each had aces in the set, Gagnepain added four assists while Gojcaj had one assist.
Seven different players had a kill for the Big Green, Gutz finished with 16 kills along with a season high 27 digs for her fourth double double of the season. Brown had a career game for the Big Green as she set career highs in points with 16, digs with 18, and total blocks with four. She notched her first second career double double with 11 kills and 18 digs. Gagnepain set a new career high with 30 assists while also tying her career high in aces with three. The Big Green tallied nine aces while setting a season high in blocks with 14. Dartmouth is now 1-0 in five set matches this season.
The Big Green continue Ivy League play next weekend with a trip to Yale on Friday, Oct. 17 and trip to Brown on Saturday, Oct. 18.
