Dartmouth defeated the Tigers, 7-0 in the series opener

HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth softball team split a series-opening doubleheader against Princeton Friday afternoon in Hanover. The Big Green showed their ability to play with the best teams in the Ivy League, knocking off the Ancient Eight's top seed by seven runs in the first half of the twin bill.

Rachel McCarroll was stellar for Dartmouth (13-22, 7-10 Ivy League) throughout the series-opener, as pitched a one-hit shutout. She blanked an opponent in a complete-game performance for the third time this season, shutting down Princeton's (23-18, 15-5 Ivy League) offense at every turn.

Kelly Beaupre led Dartmouth at the plate during game one. She recorded two hits, four RBIs and a three-run homer in just two at-bats. She also forced a pair of walks against the Tigers. Beaupre, Ashley Frantz, Lauren Ben-Ezra and Maria Angelino each recorded a pair of hits to open the afternoon in Hanover.

Princeton recovered with a 4-1 win in the second half of the twin bill as the Big Green were unable to mount a late-game rally. McCarroll pitched five complete innings, allowing just one earned run, while Izzy Kam pitched two scoreless innings to round out a strong day for Dartmouth's pitching staff. Kate Farren recorded two of Dartmouth's six hits in game two.

Game One: Dartmouth 7, Princeton 0
McCarroll and Dartmouth's defense shut down Princeton's offense to open the game. The Tigers were retired in order in the top of the first.

The Big Green rode their momentum to jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Beaupre stepped into the box with runners on first and second with one out on the board. The junior battled into a full count, then crushed the sixth pitch of the at-bat over the left field fence to bring in a trio of runs. Her team-leading seventh home run of the season put Dartmouth in the driver's seat early.

Other than a walk, Princeton was unable to generate offense in the top of the second, as a trio of pop ups closed the half inning. Angelino pushed a single to right field with one away, but the Big Green were unable to advance the senior as the score remained 3-0.

The Tigers recorded their first hit of the afternoon with a leadoff single in the top if the third. A sacrifice bunt and groundout brought Princeton's runner to third, but the scoring opportunity was extinguished after a flyout to left field.

The Big Green bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth, as Dartmouth recorded six hits and four runs to take a commanding lead on the Tigers. Frantz recorded a two-RBI double to give Dartmouth a five-run lead. A single to center from Mary Beth Cahalan brought in Frantz, and Beaupre registered her fourth RBI of the day on the subsequent at-bat to put the Big Green up by seven heading into the fifth.

Dartmouth placed runners on first and second with two away and a chance to earn a run-rule victory in the bottom of the fifth. A well-hit ball toward Princeton's shortstop struck Jenna Brown on her way to third, which retired the side.

McCarroll and the Big Green defense rode out the final two frames in style, securing Dartmouth's third-straight shutout of the Tigers. The Big Green extended its home win streak against Princeton to nine games, which dates to 2013.

Game Two: Princeton 4, Dartmouth 1
Dartmouth and Princeton were unable to generate significant offense through the first two frames, as both teams combined for just two hits. The Tigers left a runner stranded on second in the first, while the Big Green couldn't bring in Kate Farren from second the following inning.

Princeton pushed its first runner of the day across in the top of the third to take a 1-0 lead. A leadoff double and a single with one away placed a runner at third, and an RBI groundout gave the Tigers their first lead of the afternoon.

The Big Green placed runners on second and third following with two away, but the Tigers closed the inning by recording a strikeout. Princeton took advantage of Dartmouth's lone error of the day in the top of the fifth, extending its lead to with a two-RBI double and an RBI single.

Izzy Kam entered the contest for McCarroll in the top of the sixth and pitched two scoreless innings. The Big Green spoiled Princeton's shutout in the bottom of the seventh, as an RBI groundout from Allie Ohde cut the Tigers' lead to three. Dartmouth was unable to equalize the contest, as Princeton snapped its three-game skid against the Big Green.

Princeton's victory over Dartmouth in game two of the series puts the Tigers one win away from clinching a share of the Ivy League title. Dartmouth looks to keep the Tigers from securing home field advantage in the Ivy League Tournament with a strong outing tomorrow afternoon.
