NEW YORK — The Dartmouth softball team dropped the final game of a three-contest series against Columbia on Saturday afternoon. The Lions secured a 3-1 victory over the Big Green at the Columbia Softball Park as Dartmouth fell to .500 in conference play.

Kate Farren recorded her third home run of the season, which served as Dartmouth's only run of the afternoon.
Rachel McCarroll pitched 5.2 innings for the Big Green, while
Kelly Beaupre and
Leila Hennessy recorded hits alongside Farren.

The low-scoring contest was not without scoring opportunities, as the teams combined for 12 hits and 13 runners left on base. The Big Green and Lions were sound defensively, as neither team committed an error.

How it happened:
The Big Green's first three batters were retired following a quick trio of groundouts. Columbia took advantage early, loading the bases with one away. The Lions brought in the first run of the day on a sacrifice fly to left field. Dartmouth escaped the inning down by one following a deep flyout to left field.

After a scoreless frame from Dartmouth to open the second, the Big Green defense stood tall in the bottom of the inning.
Maria Angelino made two stellar plays at third to put the first two outs on the board, and Farren handled a lineout to close the inning.

Farren wasted little time in the top of the third, tying the contest with a leadoff solo home run to left center field. Her third homer of the season would not keep the game tied for long, as an RBI single in the bottom of the frame gave the leads back to Columbia.

Dartmouth placed runners on first and second with one away in the top of the fourth but left both stranded as the Big Green could not find an equalizing run. The Lions put runners on the corners in the second half of the inning. The scoring opportunity was thwarted, as the score remained stagnant.

The Big Green's first three batters of the fifth were sent back to the dugout, as a strikeout and a pair of pop ups ended the top of the frame quickly. Columbia doubled its lead in the bottom of the frame, as a leadoff solo shot to left field extended the Lions' advantage to 3-1.

With two away,
Alaana Panu and Beaupre walked on consecutive at-bats to put two runners in the top of the sixth. The Big Green forced a pitching change, and Jordan Hill forced a popup to close the inning. Dartmouth stranded Beaupre and Panu as the two-run deficit remained.

Dartmouth was unable to rally, as Columbia secured its first sweep of the Big Green since 2019. The Lions improved to 10-14 and 6-3 in conference action, while Dartmouth fell to 8-14 and an even 3-3 in the Ivy League.
