Dartmouth Comes Back Again, but Quinnipiac Proves Too Much

In each of its last two losses, the Big Green have erased deficits of 17 (vs. Bryant) and 18 (at Quinnipiac) to take second-half leads
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Dartmouth men's basketball team bounced back from an early 33-15 hole to take multiple second-half leads, but Quinnipiac ended the game on a 13-3 run to defeat the Big Green, 81-72, on Tuesday night. Sophomore Cade Haskins led the offense with a game and career-high 19 points, The game was still within three points until 12 seconds remaining, then Quinnipiac's Luis Kortright converted a step back jumper to put his team up two possessions, as the Bobcats wrapped up a home-opening win.
Quinnipiac improves to 4-0 with the victory while Dartmouth falls to 1-3.
"We have a group that is growing," said Big Green head coach David McLaughlin. "We definitely grew on the court today. Like I've mentioned before, we have to learn how to play tougher basketball, we have to learn how to play more disciplined basketball and we have to learn how to execute at a higher level. When I say toughness, that's not just physical toughness on the court. That's mental toughness knowing where you're supposed to be, knowing how we're supposed to guard something, knowing how to get to a great shot, how to take great shots, how to take care of the basketball and all those things.
"That's a lot, but this team is capable of getting better at all of those," McLaughlin continued. "That's our job as coaches to help them with that."
Like junior Dusan Neskovic in the season opener at Fordham, Haskins knocked down each of his first five 3-pointers of the evening, finishing 5-of-7 (and 7-of-11 from the floor overall). He scored 11 of his points in the first half, providing an offensive spark at a time the Big Green needed it.
Neskovic scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half, finishing the game 5-of-9 from the field. Neskovic and sophomore Ryan Cornish have each scored in double figures in all four games this season, as Cornish finished with 13 points Tuesday – 11 coming in the second half. Freshman Jackson Munro also scored a career-high 10 points for a second straight game.
Like Dartmouth, four from Quinnipiac finished in double figures in scoring, led by 18 points from Ike Nweke.
Haskins knocked down two 3-pointers in the game's first 3:52 as Dartmouth jumped out to a quick 11-6 lead.
The Bobcats went on to score 21 straight points in less than five minutes, as a Tyrese Williams trey gave Quinnipiac its largest lead at 33-15 with 7:07 on the clock.
As the first half progressed, Dartmouth began to slowly chip away. Junior Izaiah Robinson was a spark off the bench in the first, as two Robinson free throws pulled the Big Green within 10, 37-27, capping off a 12-4 run.
Trailing by 14 in the final seconds of the first half, Robinson completed a tough 3-point play to get Dartmouth within 43-32 at the break. He scored all of his season-high seven points in the first half.
The Dartmouth lead would reach as much as four on two occasions, 61-57 with 10:20 on the clock and 67-63 with 6:11 remaining. Two Neskovic free throws with 4:29 on the clock gave the Big Green what would prove to be their final lead at 69-68.
For the game, Dartmouth shot 43.3 percent from the floor (26-of-60), including 33.3 percent from 3-point range (9-of-27). Quinnipiac finished 47.0 percent (31-of-66) and 33.3 percent from distance (7-of-21). The Bobcats held a 40-26 edge on the boards.
The Big Green now break for final exams and will return to action next Friday at a tournament in San Antonio, Texas hosted by UTSA. A three-game-in-four-day stretch begins against Incarnate Word on Nov. 25 at 5 p.m. locally (6 p.m. ET).

Quinnipiac's lead reached 16 early in the second, 48-32, but Dartmouth scored 24 of the next 31 points to take its first lead since early in the first half. Haskins' fourth 3-pointer of the evening got the Big Green back within single digits, 48-40. Eventually, a Jaren Johnson backdoor layup, assisted by Munro, put Dartmouth ahead, 56-55. From that point forward, Quinnipiac outscored the Big Green 13-3. The run was a bit deceiving as six of the points came in the game's final 12 seconds. Dartmouth had multiple opportunities down a possession to pull even or take a lead, but couldn't capitalize. A Munro 3-pointer with 43 seconds remaining got the Big Green back within three, 75-72.
