Big Green Fall to Incarnate Word on Day One at 210 San Antonio Shootout

Dame Adelekun ties a career-high 15 rebounds in the defeat
SAN ANTONIO – The Dartmouth men's basketball team jumped out to a 12-3 lead, but Incarnate Word responded with a 17-2 run and wouldn't trail the rest of the way, as Dartmouth fell 69-64 on Friday at UTSA's Convocation Center. On day one of the 210 San Antonio Shootout, the Big Green made a number of rallies after falling behind as many as 13, but couldn't get any closer than two. Freshman Brandon Mitchell-Day led Dartmouth in scoring with 14 points while senior Dame Adelekun grabbed 15 rebounds to tie a career high, eight coming on the offensive glass.
Twenty-one Dartmouth turnovers, 14 coming in the first half, proved costly for the Big Green. With the win, UIW improves to 3-3 while Dartmouth falls to 1-4.
"If I had to sum it up, I just think we had to take better care of the ball," said Dartmouth head coach David McLaughlin. "They played more their game than we played our game. I thought we did respond when they made runs. We got some stops when we needed to, but you can't turn the ball over at that rate and expect to really compete and pull away from teams.
"Because we were turning the ball over, they were getting a good lead on us and making shots, now it's a little harder for us to get back into the game," McLaughlin continued. "Now, we have to get three or four consecutive stops and three or four consecutive scores, which we did on a few occasions, but we just couldn't sustain that."
Mitchell-Day provided a spark off the bench with 14 points and a career-high six rebounds in a career-high 23 minutes. Adelekun and sophomore Cade Haskins each scored nine points. Junior Jaren Johnson posted career highs in minutes (23) and assists (3), while scoring four points.
Jonathan Cisse led UIW with a game-high 22 points.
Dartmouth came out of the gates strong, which included a pair of Haskins 3-pointers. His second trey gave the Big Green a 12-3 lead with 16:14 on the first-half clock.
Incarnate Word went on to increase its lead to 13 on two occasions, including 38-25 following a Davante Dennis free throw with 2:15 left in the first half. Dartmouth answered with seven straight points to end the half, including a pair of Jackson Munro layups in the span of 38 seconds, as the Big Green went into halftime trailing by just six, 38-32.
The Big Green offense went scoreless over the next three minutes until a Munro layup, followed by Krystkowiak's second 3-pointer, pulled Dartmouth within 46-42 with 14:04 remaining.
UIW responded to increase its lead back to 10 at 52-42, but Dartmouth answered with a 12-4 run, capped off by consecutive baskets from junior Izaiah Robinson, which got the Big Green within 56-54 with 7:45 remaining.
For the game, the Big Green shot 37.7 percent from the floor (23-of-61), including 28.6 percent from 3-point range (8-of-28). UIW finished at 39.0 percent (23-of-59) and 16.7 percent from behind the arc (2-of-12). Dartmouth held a 44-34 edge in rebounds, including 17 offensive boards.
After an off day on Saturday, the Big Green return to UTSA to face the host Roadrunners on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. EST on CUSA.TV.

Incarnate Word went on to increase its lead to 13 on two occasions, including 38-25 following a Davante Dennis free throw with 2:15 left in the first half. From there, Incarnate Word's lead remained between two and six, with Dartmouth unable to get any closer. The margin reached eight in the final minute, then nine.
