Road Trip Ends in Sunshine State
• Dartmouth continues its challenging early slate by concluding a three-game road trip at Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday evening.
• The Big Green had a three-game win streak snapped on Wednesday at Twin State rival, Vermont, by an 83-65 count.
•
Aaryn Rai put up 20 points — the third 20-point game of his career — and nine rebounds to lead Dartmouth.
• A
Robert McRae III 3-pointer in the final minute gave the Green 10 triples on the night, marking just the four time that the team has hit double-digit trifectas in four straight games.
•
Garrison Wade provided a personal-best three of those long balls, matching a career-high with 13 points.
•
Brendan Barry remains the Big Green scoring leader on the season at 13.4 ppg but was held to eight against the Catamounts, going 2-of-10 from the floor, though he did dish out a season-high four assists.
• Against the four Division I opponents this season, Dartmouth has shot below 40 percent three times. But the Big Green did hit all 11 foul shots at Vermont, their first game without a miss at the line in 16 years.
Series vs. FGCU
• This is the return game from two years ago after Dartmouth defeated the Eagles in Hanover, 55-49.
• Dartmouth got 17 points in the game from players that are still on the squad, led by
Aaryn Rai with 10.
• This is the second of three trips that will require flights for the Big Green. The first led to a victory over Georgetown, and the last will send the team to California to play against Stanford, California and Cal State Bakersfield.
• The Big Green are 4-4 all-time against current Atlantic Sun teams. Dartmouth has split four games with Stetson, lost twice to Jacksonville and defeated NJIT in January of 2015, 62-53.
Scouting the Eagles
• Like Dartmouth, FGCU ended November on a winning streak (five in this case) only to stumble on Dec. 1, dropping a 77-61 decision to Florida International.
• The Eagles are 6-1 on their home court with the lone loss against No. 25 USC, and 0-2 on the road.
• FGCU went 10-8 in the shortened 2020-21 campaign and lost in the conference tournament semifinal to North Alabama.
• The Eagles are averaging 79.0 points a game while hitting nearly as many threes a night as Dartmouth (11.3, 10th nationally).
• Pint-sized guard (5-8, 155) Tavian Dunn-Martin makes the Eagles go, averaging 18.9 points and 4.1 assists per game while shooting 42.3 percent from long range (22-of-52).
• Guard Cyrus Largie also scores in double figures (13.3 ppg) while shooting better than 50 percent from the floor, and guard Caleb Catto is the most accurate from downtown at 45.2 percent.
• Center Kevin Samuel at 6-11 is the rim protector with 25 blocks (13 in the last three games) while leading the team in rebounding (8.3 rpg).
• Michael Fly (Kentucky '06) is in his fourth season guiding the Eagles after serving seven years as an assistant with the team. His second year on staff was when FGCU was labeled "Dunk City," becoming the first 15-seed to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. He owns a record of 40-51 entering this contest.
Twin State Terror
Dartmouth may have won 38 of the first 41 meetings with Vermont through the 1962-63 season, but the Catamounts are closing the gap in the series. The 83-65 UVM win on Dec. 1 was its 13th straight over the Big Green and 21st in the last 22 meetings. Even with this quarter-century stretch, Dartmouth still holds the all-time lead against the Catamounts, 57-48.
Twenty Points for Rai
For the first time in one year and one day,
Aaryn Rai reached 20 points in a game by hitting the mark right on the nose at Vermont in an 83-65 loss on Dec. 1. He also had 20 points at Bowling Green on Nov. 30, 2019 in a 76-69 defeat. He now has made it to 20 three times in his career, the first being a career-high 21 as a sophomore in a one-point, overtime loss at home versus Princeton on March 1, 2019.
Wade For It …
Garrison Wade had his outside stroke working at Vermont on Dec. 1, draining 3-of-6 from behind the arc, the first time he had made more than one trey in a game. He finished the night with 13 points, matching a career high. The senior has now hit double digits twice this season after doing so just once in his career entering the campaign.
Perfection at the Stripe
Perfection isn't usually a term one throws around about an 18-point loss, but Dartmouth did convert all 11 of its free throws in the game, seven by
Aaryn Rai. It was the first time in 16 years the Big Green did not miss any foul shots they attempted in a game, and that was just a 4-for-4 performance. The last time Dartmouth hit more than 11 freebies without missing? Try March 5, 1994 when the team made all 24, a program record.
Scouting the Perimeter
Over the last four games, Dartmouth has connected on 51-of-123 3-point shots (.415), hitting 10 or more in each contest. It is just the sixth time in program history the team has hit 10 or more triples in three straight games with the longest streak being six in a row from Feb. 2-22, 2002. And the Big Green only once have hit more trifectas in a three-game stretch in a single season, that being 50 to start the 2018-19 campaign.
Leading the Nation
Even though he hit just 2-of-7 3-pointers at Vermont,
Brendan Barry once again is one of the best long-ball shooters in the country. Over the last four games, the graduate has hit 18-of-35 triples (.514), knocking down five long balls in three of those contests. With 4.0 treys per game on the season, Barry is fifth among all Division I players, plus is sixth among active players in career 3-point percentage (.445).
