HANOVER, N.H. – Four goals from Katie Weatherston (Thunder Bay, Ont.) lifted the women's hockey team past Rensselaer, 6-3, in Game One of the ECACHL Quarterfinals, held at Thompson Arena.
Rensselaer jumped out to an early lead, opening the nights scoring at 3:34 of the first period. Freshman Whitney Naslund picked up a rebound in front of the Dartmouth cage, and buried it past Big Green netminder Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.), giving the Engineers the first lead of the game.
Five minutes later, Weatherston netted her first of the game. Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) hit Weatherston with a backdoor pass, which she one-timed past Ashley Mayr, evening the score at ones.
Then at 13:10, Bowman put her name on the scoring list, as her and Weatherston broke into the Rensselaer zone on a 2-on-1 break. Fine one-touch passing ended with Bowman blasting a shot past Mayr for her ninth tally of the season.
Dartmouth controlled the shot count in the first period, taking it to the Engineers, 13-4.
Just 56 seconds into the second frame, Weatherston recorded her second of the game. After Bowman put a shot on net, which was initially turned away by Mayr, the senior was there to bury the rebound.
The special teams of the Big Green also shined in tonight's contest, as senior Meredith Batcheller (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) stripped the puck from a Rensselaer defender and skated into the Engineers zone short handed. Batcheller wristed a shot that beat Mayr low to the left hand side, increasing their lead to, 4-1.
The final two goals of the second period went to the Engineers, as Naslund netted two more, giving her the hat-trick and bringing Rensselaer with in one goal heading into the final 20 minutes.
The Big Green finished strong in the third period, putting two more goals on the board, and giving Dartmouth the win in Game One of the best-of-three series. It was Weatherston who put the final touches on the game, concluding a four-goal, five-point night for the senior.
Game Two of the series will take place tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in Thompson Arena.
