PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Three special teams goals propelled the Big Green women's hockey team past Brown Saturday night, 5-1, to move to 7-1-0 in ECAC play, and a perfect 3-0 in the Ivies.
The Big Green, after out shooting the Bears 12-2 in the first period went into the first intermission down, 1-0. A Sarah Newnam (Lexington, Ky.) penalty gave Brown a power play late in the first period, and the Bears' Rylee Olewinski took advantage of it, beating Dartmouth goaltender Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.).
Dartmouth evened the score early in the second period, when captain Gillian Apps (Unionville, Ont.) netted her 11th goal of the season on a pass from Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.). 28 shots between both teams in the period couldn't break a, 1-1, tie as they headed into the final 20 minutes all even.
The Big Green broke free in the third though, scoring four unanswered goals. The rally started on the power play at 5:03 of the third when sophomore Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.) buried a shot past Brown net minder Nicole Stock to jump the Big Green ahead, 2-1.
Brown was issued another penalty just two minutes after the Big Green goal, putting the Dartmouth special teams back on the ice. Senior Cherie Piper (Scarborough, Ont.) and freshman Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) set up Parsons for her seventh goal of the year.
Frustration set in after the Big Green comeback, causing another Brown penalty one minute later. Defenseman Meredith Batcheller (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) scored her first goal of the season, on passes from Parsons and Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.). Batchellers' goal ended a spree of three power play goals in three minutes.
Piper closed out the scoring on the day at 14:50 of the period, racking up her fourth goal of the season, and giving the Big Green the 5-1 victory. Assists on Pipers goal were credited to Apps and Julia Bronson (Arlington, Va.)
The Bears stay winless on the season, dropping to 0-9 overall.
Clemis ended the night making 27 saves, while Stock stopped 35 Dartmouth chances.
The Big Green will be back in action next weekend, as their road trip continues traveling to Princeton and Quinnipiac.
