PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Dartmouth softball team fell to Brown following a walk-off sacrifice fly on Sunday, April 16. The Big Green recorded 11 hits in an offensive battle with the Bears but came up short in its attempt to complete the sweep of the series.
All five runs for Dartmouth (11-17, 6-6 Ivy League) came in an explosive fifth inning.
Ashley Frantz,
Lauren Ben-Ezra,
Maria Angelino and
Allie Ohde each batted in runs for the Big Green in a productive frame.
Seven different players recorded hits for Dartmouth, with Ben-Ezra leading the day with three hit on four at-bats. Brown (10-22, 6-9 Ivy League) matched Dartmouth's hit output and overcame three errors to earn the win.
How it happened:
The Big Green loaded the bases in the top of the second after a quiet first inning from both teams. Dartmouth benefitted from a two-out fielding error from the Bears. Brown escaped the jam, as Ohde was unable to bring in the first runs of the day leaving a trio of runners stranded.
The Bears broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second, as Jasmine Hsiao sent a solo shot over the fence at left center field. Brown placed a runner on third with a one-out double and a stolen base. Katelynn Park drove in a run on a single down the left field line to extend Brown's lead to 2-0. Brown put another pair of runners aboard with one away, but a pair of flyouts closed the inning.
Hsiao extended Brown's lead to three with her second home run of the day in the bottom of the third.
Dartmouth responded with an explosion of offense in the top of the fourth, bringing in five runs to take a 5-3 advantage. Angelino gave the Big Green their first run of the day with an RBI single, which was followed immediately by a sacrifice fly from Ohde to trim Brown's lead to one.
Frantz gave Dartmouth its first lead of the afternoon, as the freshman sent a single up the middle to bring in a pair of runs. Fellow freshman Ben-Ezra immediately followed with an RBI single to give the Big Green a two-run advantage heading into the bottom of the inning.
Brown put the pressure on Dartmouth in the bottom of the frame, as the Bears placed runners on second and third with one out on the board. Hsiao continued her dominant day at the plate, as she brought in both runners with a double. The game headed to the sixth tied, 5-5.
Dartmouth put runners on second and third in the top of the seventh, following a single from Ben-Ezra and a double from Beaupre. Brown escaped the situation unscathed, forcing a pair of outs to close the half inning.
The Bears loaded the bases with one away in the bottom of the seventh, which allowed a sacrifice fly to give the home team the win. Dartmouth's six-game win streak over the Bears was snapped following the walk-off loss in Providence.
