Big Green Sweep Doubleheader Against Brown to Open Weekend Series

Dartmouth picked up a pair of crucial Ivy League wins over Brown on the road

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Kate Farren and Kelly Beaupre provided Dartmouth with 12 combined RBIs over the course of a successful doubleheader against the Brown Bears. The Big Green pushed past their conference foe in both contests by scores of 4-0 and 13-9.

Kate Farren and Rachel McCarroll fueled Dartmouth (11-16, 6-5 Ivy League) to victory in the opening game of the afternoon. Farren recorded a pair of home runs and a trio of RBIs to aid the Big Green's offense to success.

McCarroll pitched her recorded her second shutout of the season in her 10^th complete game of the season. The sophomore struck out five batters and allowed just five hits in a stellar performance against Brown (9-22, 5-9 Ivy League)

Beaupre was dominant in the second game of the day, as she recorded two home runs and seven RBIs in an explosive offensive performance from the Big Green. Lauren Ben-Ezra and Farren each recorded a pair of RBIs in game two.

The Big Green recorded 13 runs in a game for the first time since April 24, 2021 against UMass. Game two also saw the most runs Dartmouth has scored in an Ivy League tilt since April 20, 2019 against Cornell.

"We were very excited to be able to come down here and show what we can do at the plate," head coach Jen Williams said. "We've been struggling a little bit to do that the last two weekends, so to be able to come here and have such consistency at the plate was huge for us."

Game One: Dartmouth 4, Brown 0
The Big Green and Bears were held off the board in the first inning. Dartmouth was retired in order to open the game, while Brown placed runners on second and third with one away. McCarroll and the defense escaped the jam, catching a runner in between third and home and striking out the final batter to end the inning.

Dartmouth placed runners on first and second following a single from Kate Farren and a walk by Jenna Brown. The Big Green stranded both as the top of the second ended on a strikeout. The Bears left two runners on base in the bottom of the inning.

Farren opened the scoring in the top of the fourth, as the senior recorded a two-run homer to left field, giving Dartmouth the first lead of the afternoon. Her fourth home run of the season brought Alaana Panu in for her 13^th run of the year, which leads the Big Green.

The Big Green placed runners on the corners with two away, as a throwing error advanced Ashley Frantz to third following a single from Mary Beth Cahalan. Dartmouth left the runners stranded, as a flyout to right field closed the top of the fifth.

A walk and a single put brought the go-ahead run to the plate for Brown with one away. Dartmouth shut the door on the Bears' offense, forcing a pair of flyouts to keep Brown off the board heading into the sixth.

Farren registered her team-leading fifth home run of the season in the top of the sixth to extend the Big Green's lead. The senior crushed a solo shot over the fence at right center field to give her team a 3-0 advantage in the late stages of the contest.

The Big Green were forced to overcome adversity in the top of the sixth, as their lead was put in jeopardy numerous times. The Bears put runners on second and third with one away. A popup put Dartmouth on the verge of escaping the inning, but a walk loaded the bases and brought the go-ahead run to the plate. Cahalan calmly handled a lineout at first to close the frame and escape the jam.

Panu gave Dartmouth an insurance run in the top of the seventh, as an RBI single extended the Big Green's lead to 4-0. McCarroll and Dartmouth's defense retired Brown in order in the bottom of the seventh to clinch a much-needed victory in the series opener.

Farren's two-home run game marked the third time a member of the Big Green went yard multiple times in one day in 2023. She joined Cahalan (vs. Maine, 3/17) and Beaupre (vs. Penn, 3/25) who accomplished this feat earlier this season.

Game Two: Dartmouth 13, Brown 9
The Big Green jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, kicking off game two with an explosion of offense. After a pair of walks placed two runners aboard, Beaupre sent a ball soaring over the fence in left field to put a trio of runs on the board. Beaupre's homer brought her even with Farren for the team lead in home runs.

Dartmouth picked up right where it left off during the top of the second. Lauren Ben-Ezra stepped into the box with two runners on and two away. The freshman capitalized with her first-career triple, which brought in a pair of runs. A wild pitch would bring Ben-Ezra home from third to give Dartmouth a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.

A battle of siblings took place in the bottom of the second, as Dartmouth's pitcher, Izzy Kam faced off with her sister, Liv, Brown's second baseman. Liv won the first battle of the sisters, recording an RBI single to cut into Dartmouth's lead. The Big Green recovered quickly, taking a 6-1 lead into the third.

The fourth inning saw another trio of runs from the Big Green, as Dartmouth moved into run-rule territory. Farren continued her strong day at the plate, as she registered a two-RBI triple, which was followed by an RBI-bunt single from Brown to give Dartmouth a 9-1 lead after four frames.

A sacrifice fly from Beaupre in the top of the fifth extended Dartmouth's lead to nine runs. Brown responded with a strong performance in the bottom of the fifth, tacking on five runs to extend the game and cut Dartmouth's lead to 10-6.

Brown challenged Dartmouth by trimming the lead to three in the bottom of the sixth. Beaupre responded with another three-run homer to left center field to give the Big Green a six-run advantage.

The Bears recorded a two-run homer over the fence in the bottom of the seventh, but it would not be enough to overcome the deficit. Dartmouth held on to the lead and secured the 13-9 victory to complete the sweep of the twin bill.

McCarroll was called upon to pitch a pair of innings for the Big Green and recorded her first save of the season. Williams noted her leadership and determination following the second game of the day.

"Our whole pitching staff did a tremendous job today, but Rachel just had such composure, grit and determination on the mound," Williams said. "It was terrific to have that leadership from her out there and it just lifts the rest of the team to keep going."

The Big Green look to secure a sweep of Brown tomorrow afternoon in the series finale. Game three is set to begin at 12:30 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet internationally.
