Adelekun’s Record Performance Leads Dartmouth Past Columbia, 83-73

Adelekun finishes with 41 points and 10 rebounds in a performance to remember
HANOVER, N.H. — Senior Dame Adelekun put forth a historic effort, tying a Leede Arena record with 41 points while adding 10 rebounds to become just the fourth player in Division I men's basketball this season to post a 40-point double-double, as he led the Dartmouth men's basketball team to a big 83-73 home win over Columbia on Saturday afternoon. With the previous record held by Matt Morgan of Cornell in 2019, Adelekun's 41 points were the most by a Big Green student-athlete in the facility's 35-year history. Adelekun became the first Dartmouth student-athlete to score 40 points in a game since Jim Barton had 48 on Feb. 7, 1987 at Brown.
With the win, Dartmouth improves to 8-13 overall and 4-3 in Ivy League play. It's the first time since 2008-09 that the Big Green own a winning record at the midway point of the Ivy League slate. Columbia falls to 6-16 and 1-6 in the league.
"You always want to play to your strengths," said Dartmouth head coach David McLaughlin. "We're an inside-out team, we play through Dame and we played through him in various ways the way they were guarding us. The best thing about it is he was not rushed today. He really took his time and did a nice job changing and getting to angles. He did a good job not rushing.
"And when you have the ball in your hands for that long, to only have two turnovers is pretty impressive as well," McLaughlin continued.
Adelekun's 41 points shattered his previous career high of 21 set in this season's opener at Fordham. He finished Saturday 14-of-18 from the floor and 13-of-19 from the free throw line, while adding 10 rebounds, two assists and three blocks.
Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa led Columbia with 19 points.
The Big Green attempted just 10 3-pointers all afternoon, making two, marking their fewest attempts since Feb. 22, 2020 vs. Princeton when Dartmouth was 3-for-10.
"They were guarding us a certain way and really cutting down our 3-point attempts with pressure on the wings, so we played inside-out pretty much for 40 minutes," said McLaughlin. "When the ball comes back out from there, because the way they're guarding you, the closeout angles are going to be a little different and driving lines will be open. I thought those [Dusan drives] were two key, key plays."
A tight first half saw neither team lead by more than four points. Dartmouth opened an early 6-2 lead following an Adelekun layup, and later 9-5 advantage after a Krystkowiak 3-pointer with 14:17 on the clock.
Columbia took its first lead since 2-0 after a De La Rosa floater gave the Lions a 13-12 advantage midway through the first half. A few minutes later, a De La Rosa 3-pointer gave the Lions a 21-17 lead with 7:28 on the clock.
The ensuing minutes saw two ties and four lead changes. Adelekun took over late in the half. He ended up scoring the Big Green's final six points of the stanza to even the score at 33 after 20 minutes of play.
The Big Green used an early 6-0 second-half surge, with four of the points scored by Adelekun, to retake a four-point, 39-35 lead with 16:56 on the second-half clock. A minute later, Adelekun had a spin move and emphatic dunk then less than 10 seconds later, had an even more emphatic block to get the crowd of nearly 1,000 fans to its feet.
The following three minutes saw six lead changes. That trend continued deep into the half, until Dartmouth staged an 11-2 run to turn a one-point deficit into an eight-point lead. The run began with a Cornish and-one layup, included a Cornish pullup jumper, Krystkowiak dunk and ended with five consecutive Adelekun points to give Dartmouth a 77-69 lead with 1:53 on the clock.
For the game, the Big Green shot 57.7 percent from the floor (30-of-52), including 20.0 percent from behind the arc (2-of-10). Columbia finished at 45.3 percent (29-of-64) and 40.0 percent from 3-point range (10-of-25). The Big Green held a 37-28 edge in rebounds.
Dartmouth returns home next weekend to host Brown on Friday and Yale on Saturday. Opening tipoff each night is set for 6 p.m.

One game after scoring a career-high 31 points, sophomore Ryan Cornish added 16, with 12 coming after halftime.
