PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The host Brown Bears took advantage of 37 trips to the foul line, making 33, to defeat Dartmouth on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center, 75-60. Both Peter Sullivan and Matt Mullery recorded double-doubles for Brown and combined to convert 23-of-26 free throws to help Brown improve to 8-16 on the season and 2-5 in the Ivy League. Freshman Matt LaBove was the lone Dartmouth (4-17, 0-7 Ivy) player in double figures with 12 points, though 10 of the 11 players in a Big Green uniform had at least one field goal.
Sullivan scored a game-high 23 points despite making just four field goals in five attempts as he sank 14-of-16 at the line. His 11 rebounds also led all players, while Mullery tallied 17 points and 10 rebounds. Joining the duo in double figures for the Bears were Garrett Leffelman and Tucker Halpern with 14 and 10, respectively. Brown had its stroke going from behind the arc as well, hitting half of its 16 attempts from three-point range.
Dartmouth had four players with at least eight points, with LaBove leading the way by going 4-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-4 at the charity stripe. Junior forward Clive Weeden chipped in nine points and a team-high nine rebounds. As a team, Dartmouth shot 40 percent (24-of-60), but missed each of its three-point attempts for the second time this season, going 0-for-7.
The game began well for the Big Green as they scored the first six points, four from LaBove, in the opening two minutes. But once Leffelman hit a three-pointer, Brown kept feeding him the ball. Leffelman hit four triples in the first five minutes while scoring the Bears' first 14 points to take a 14-8 lead. As it turned out, those were the only points Leffelman scored in the game.
Jumpers by sophomores Jabari Trotter and Josh Riddle brought Dartmouth back within two, but Brown's Matt Sullivan got into the long-range act with a three-pointer. The Bears continued to build their lead in the opening stanza, opening up a 14-point advantage at one point, before settling for a 39-29 lead at the break. Brown took 13 foul shots in the half, making every one.
Dartmouth did not pack it in during the second half, scoring eight straight after a Brown bucket by Mullery began the period. The deficit remained in single digits and was as close as three points after freshman R.J. Griffin converted a three-point play for the Big Green with just under 10 minutes to play.
The Big Green had a chance to get within one, but missed a pair of free throws on their next trip down the floor. The difference then fluctuated between four and eight points until the clock showed less than three minutes to play. Brown sealed Dartmouth's fate by making 11-of-12 at the foul line.
The Bears overall shot just 38.6 percent (17-of-44) from the floor, but more than made up for that shortcoming with their free throw accuracy. In addition, they also outrebounded the Big Green, 38-33.
Dartmouth, now on a six-game losing streak, will attempt to end the slide on Saturday night at Yale (9-15, 3-4 Ivy) at 7 p.m. Brown plays host to Harvard (16-5, 5-2 Ivy) tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. as well.
