Complete Game Notes
Two-Game Trip to Iowa
• The Dartmouth men are making just their fourth trip ever to the state of Iowa, taking on Iowa State and Drake.
• Last time out the Big Green suffered a sloppy, foul-plagued 69-61 loss at St. Francis (N.Y.). The two teams combined for 55 fouls, 38 turnovers and 29 missed free throws, but it was the Terriers who had more in each of those categories.
• The performance of junior Kirk Crecco was in stark contrast to much of the game as he posted a career-high 19 points while hitting 8-of-14 from the floor with six rebounds. Crecco had scored just 27 points in the first eight games combined.
• Senior forward Clive Weeden also put up some good numbers with 12 points, five rebounds and a career-best four assists.
• Juniors Jabari Trotter and David Rufful continue to pace the team in scoring and rebounding, respectively. Trotter chipped in 10 points in the game and averages 10.9 per night, while Rufful claimed seven rebounds, marking the seventh time in nine games the 6-4 wing has led the Green.
• Dartmouth was ranked 40th nationally in free throw percentage (.744) before the game at St. Francis, in which the Big Green hit just 14-of-25 (.560) from the line. And the team's three-point percentage of 35.5 was 124th in the country, a huge improvement over last year's 29.4 percent.
Series vs. Iowa State
• Dartmouth has never played the Cyclones prior to this game. In fact, the Big Green have only played two games against teams from the entire state previously, both losses to the Hawkeyes of Iowa in the 1987-88 and 1993-94 seasons.
• This is just the fifth game Dartmouth will have played within the borders of the state — the two games at Iowa listed above, and two games in the Corn Bowl on December 29-30, 1948, against Minnesota (64-52 loss) and Vanderbilt (64-52 win).
Scouting the Cyclones
• Iowa State has won three straight, including a 75-72 victory over rival Iowa, but has not played in a full week. This will be the ninth game out of 11 that the Cyclones will play on their home court.
• Last Sunday, Scott Christopherson and Diante Garrett each tallied 16 points — almost exactly their average on the year — to lead ISU to an 11-point win over Texas Southern, 65-54.
• The Cyclones did not go deep into their bench with only one reserve playing more than four minutes. For the season, only 10 players have seen time on the court.
• As a team, Iowa State is averaging 78 points a game while shooting 46.2 percent overall and 39.0 percent from downtown.
• Christopherson has an absurd three-point percentage (.549), knocking down 39-of-71 behind the arc while leading the team in scoring (16.5).
• Jake Anderson and Melvin Ejim make for a nice tandem on the blocks with the former grabbing 8.5 rebounds a game and the latter shooting 61.1 percent from the floor.
• The defense has been pretty stout as well, holding teams to a 36.7 shooting percentage and 61.1 ppg.
• Fred Hoiberg is in his first season guiding his alma mater, where he scored 1,993 points.
Crecco Creates Points
It wasn't just that Kirk Crecco scored a career-high 19 points against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Dec. 14, but also the way he did it. Four times the 6-3 junior snared a ball off the offensive glass, and each time put it back through the hoop. As a team, Dartmouth had 19 offensive rebounds, its most in over two years (21 vs. Lehigh on Nov. 29, 2008), while scoring 17 second-chance points.
Dishin' Dixon
Moved to point guard by head coach Paul Cormier, senior Ronnie Dixon has found that he enjoys giving at least as much as receiving. Three times he has handed out at least six assists in a game with a career-high seven at St. Francis on Dec. 14. In the previous four seasons, a Big Green player has had six or more helpers a total of 10 times, and only one topped seven (Michael Giovacchini, 8 vs. VMI on Nov. 10, 2007).
Fouling Frenzy
In the first eight games, Dartmouth did not have a single player foul out of a game, nor did its opponent. That all changed at St. Francis as both sides had two players disqualified while combining for a whopping 55 fouls. The Big Green have not played a game with as many fouls in this decade, and their opponent has not committed as many fouls (28) since Feb. 19, 2000, when Brown was whistled 29 times in a 92-87 Dartmouth victory.
Rallying for a Win
Dartmouth found itself in a 12-point hole early in the second half against visiting Army on Dec. 11, yet managed to rally for a 71-68 victory. The last Big Green win when trailing by at least 10 points came on Feb. 21, 2009, when they came back from a 13-point deficit at Princeton. The victory evened the series with the Black Knights at 17 apiece.
Three-Point Theater
Playing against one of the top three-point-shooting teams in the country, Dartmouth beat Army at its own game in the second half by raining down eight triples in just 11 attempts. The Black Knights entered the game shooting 42.2 percent on threes and ranked among the top 15 nationally. But the Big Green finished the game 10-of-18 behind the arc, its best percentage (.556) in a game with at least four treys in nearly four years when they had an identical performance against Stony Brook.
