HANOVER, N.H. – Freshman Sasha Nanji (Markham, Ont.) scored two of the three power play goals scored by the Dartmouth women's hockey team as the Big Green came away with an impressive 6-3 victory over Boston College on Wednesday evening.
Dartmouth (8-11-2) got a career-high in both goals and points from Nanji as she also collected an assist for three points, while classmate Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, Que.) also posted three points with a goal and two assists. Sophomore Jenna Hobeika (Alpine, N.J.) had a career night with a high of three points on a goal and two helpers. Senior Mariel Lacina (London, Ont.) got some offense behind her and earned her fifth win of the year, making 21 saves between the pipes. The Big Green ended up with three power play goals in five opportunities to tie the season high, which came against Vermont on Dec. 30.
Boston College (5-13-9) was led by Allie Thunstrom, who recorded two of the three goals, while Kristina Brown was credited with the second goal by the Eagles. Goaltender Corinne Boyles was peppered all night by Dartmouth and she made 36 stops, including 28 in the final two periods.
In the first period, Dartmouth had a pair of scoring opportunities, but just like last Friday night the opposing netminder denied the Big Green in the first 20 minutes. Senior co-captain Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.) had a golden opportunity in the slot, but Boyles flashed the glove to rob Dartmouh's top goal scorer.
Lacina also made a couple of spectacular saves herself. With 14:24 remaining in the period, she made a sprawling save after over-committing to the opposite side of the goal mouth. She kept Boston College off the scoreboard on two breakaway chances as well.
Thunstrom finally got through the Big Green netminder to make it 1-0 with 3:18 left in the period. Andrea Green fired a shot that went wide and bounced off the back boards and Thunstrom was at the near post for the cleanup.
The Eagles increased their lead to 2-0 early in the second period as Brown netted her fourth of the season coming unassisted just two minutes into the frame.
Dartmouth came back with four unanswered scored in the second to overtake Boston College at 4-2. Cunningham got the Big Green on the board at 2-1 with her 15th of the season. She tipped home a shot from the slot with the connection coming from junior Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.). The goal came 14 seconds following the second goal by Boston College.
Nanji tied the score at 2-2 with her first of the night on the power play. Hobeika found Nanji at the top of the right circle and she found an opening and beat Boyles for her fourth of the season. That goal came 1:30 after Cunningham put the Big Green on the board.
The domination in the second continued as Dartmouth got its first lead at 3-2 with a goal from Dumais. Nanji was credited with the assist after finding Dumais out front for her sixth goal of the year.
The Big Green went up 4-2 on Hobeika's third of the season on a nice rebound shot that beat Boyles to the near post. Dumais put a shot on net that was stopped by a Boston College skate, but Hobeika stuck with the play for the score.
The second period finished with an Eagles goal with nine seconds remaining to cut the lead down to 4-3. Thunstrom, once again came through with an individual effort. She put one shot on net that Lacina couldn't handle and she collected puck. Thunstrom then circled around traffic and hit the open net.
In the third frame, Nanji netted her second of the night with a blast from the point that found its way through the cluster in front to get Dartmouth up by two goals again at 5-3. Trunzo gave the Big Green even more breathing room at 6-3 with 9:27 remaining. The goal came on the power play as Parsons made an outstanding pass from the opposite boards to a streaking Trunzo. She tipped home the pass at the far post and for Parsons it was her second assist of the night. Trunzo also collected two points with a goal and assist.
Dartmouth outshot Boston College, 42-24, and held the Eagles off the scoreboard on three power play chances.
The Big Green will look to make three in a row this coming Friday as Harvard skates to Hanover for a 3:30 p.m. start at Thompson Arena. Fans will receive free admission to the Harvard game on Friday afternoon with the purchase of a men's hockey vs. Quinnipiac ticket. The Big Green men take on the Bobcats following the women's game at 7 p.m. at Thompson Arena.
