HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth (8-11, 4-5) women's volleyball team got even with Cornell (6-14, 3-6) as the Big Green defeated the Big Red, 3-0 on Friday in Leede Arena. Cornell had won the matchup earlier this season. Game scores were 25-20, 25-22, 24-26, 25-20.
Each set was close throughout. In the opening set the two teams were tied six times before Dartmouth took over the lead and went up by as much as four before Cornell came back to tie the contest again. The Big Green never relinquished the lead and even led by six late in the frame before taking the victory in the first set.
In Set Two it was again Dartmouth that took the early lead and led by seven but the Big Red mounted a comeback and were down by just two at 18-20 but kills by Lexie Campbell (Solana Beach, Calif.), Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Annie Villanueva (Santa Barbara, Calif.) helped the Big Green hold off the comeback and take the victory and lead two sets to none.
In the third set it was a little different as the two teams were point-for-point throughout most of the contest. A kill by Alissa Santa Maria (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and a Big Red error allowed Dartmouth to take the lead but several Big Green errors allowed Cornell to tie the contest at 24-24. Two Dartmouth errors allowed the Big Red to take the next two points to win its first set of the match.
The fourth set was much like the other three had been, close from the very beginning. The Big Green took its largest lead at 16-13 off a kill by Krista Merchat (Carlsbad, Calif.) and two Cornell errors. But the Big Red came right back to capitalize on several Dartmouth errors to tie the set at 18. Two straight kills by Morgan Covington (Katy, Texas) gave the Big Green a 20-18 lead as Cornell called a timeout. But Dartmouth used its time wisely and came out from the break to never allow the Big Red to get close, taking the victory.
Villanueva led the Big Green in kills with 16 and had a .414 hitting percentage. She also notched six total blocks. Five Dartmouth players were in double-figures for digs led by Campbell with a career-high 26. Jessie Hartman (Woodside, Calif.) also had a big day with 18 digs.
Dartmouth will be back in action next weekend with its last home contests. The Big Green will host Brown and Yale on Parents weekend and senior day.
