PROVIDENCE, R.I. ? Senior Alex Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) hit five three-pointers and tallied a career-high 28 points, but the host Providence Friars still managed to send the Big Green to a 100-82 defeat at the Dunkin Donuts Center on Tuesday evening in front of 4,762 fans. Providence (1-1) picked up its first win under head coach Keno Davis, while Dartmouth (0-2) lost its second straight to open the season.
Barnett hit 10-of-20 from the floor, including 5-of-8 from long range, and all three of his free throws to top his previous best of 25 points from nearly one year ago exactly against Vermont. Freshman Jabari Trotter (Northridge, Calif.) had his stroke going as well, knocking down 6-of-10 overall and 3-of-4 behind the arc for 19 points, while sophomore Ronnie Dixon (Danville, Ill.) ripped the nets on all three of his shots from downtown to more than double his career high with 13 points.
Although Dartmouth was dominated on the glass by a hefty 53-33 margin, freshman Herve Kouna (Ebolowa, Cameroon) managed to haul in 12 boards in just 18 minutes before fouling out.
Seven Friars scored in double figures, led by Marshon Brooks and Randall Hanke off the bench with 18 and 16 points, respectively.
Nearly one-third of the Friars' points came from the charity stripe as they hit 31-of-46 from the line. Dartmouth had accuracy but not the quantity, converting 12-of-14 foul shots in the game. The disparity can be traced back to 33 fouls against the Big Green and just 13 on Providence. Three Dartmouth players fouled out as well.
The Friars jumped out to a 19-5 lead and never trailed in the game. Dartmouth clawed its way back, however, twice closing to within five after a Trotter three-pointer within a 30-second span. The second triple made the score 41-36, but Providence got the lead back to 10 at the half. After Barnett hit a bucket to start the second half, Providence responded right back then never let the lead get back into single digits.
Dartmouth had not allowed an opponent to score 100 points against them in more than six years. On Feb. 16, 2002, Penn scored exactly 100 as well against the Big Green in Philadelphia.
The 12 three-pointers by Dartmouth are the most since dropping 15 against Tufts back on Dec. 4, 2003, a span of almost five years..
The Big Green plays their home opener on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. against Colgate.
