PISCATAWAY, N.J. ? The Dartmouth men's basketball team carried a lead deep into the second half, but the Scarlet Knights escaped with the 55-50 win over the Big Green at the Rutgers Athletic Center on Tuesday night.

“We played hard,” said head coach Terry Dunn. “In the first half we hit our shots, but in the second we couldn't put enough in the basket. I'm proud of our effort, but we came up short.”

Rutgers (4-1) came out on fire with eight points in the first three minutes of play, led by Hamady N'diaye's six points.

Dartmouth (1-3), however was able to sustain the run by the Scarlet Knights and crawled back into the game thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from junior Alex Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.).

After a layup from junior Adam Powers (Western Springs, Ill.) to cut the lead to 10-8 for Rutgers, Dartmouth went on a scoring drought over the next six minutes. The Scarlet Knights took advantage and increased their lead to 17-10 with 8:20 remaining in the first half.

The lead for Rutgers didn't last long as Dartmouth finished the half on an impressive 18-4 run, highlighted by two 3-pointers from senior Michael Ginovacchini (Salt Lake City, Utah) and three-point plays from Barnett and junior DeVon Mosley (Mesquite, Texas). The Big Green took a 30-21 lead into the locker room.

Dartmouth held Rutgers to 36 percent shooting in the first half, including 1-of-9 from beyond the arc. The Big Green forced nine turnovers and only 21 points.

In the second half, the Scarlet Knights opened the half with an 18-9 run to even the score at 39-39. Anthony Farmer got Rutgers back into the game with eight points during the run. The Scarlet Knights took their first lead at 43-41 on a layup from N'diaye with 7:30 left in the game.

The Scarlet Knights increased its lead to 52-46 for their largest of the second half with 5:13 on the clock. The Big Green fought back to cut the deficit to 52-50 on four-straight points from Barnett, who finished with a game-high 16 points.

Dartmouth, however, could not overcome the Scarlet Knights down the stretch as Byron Jones sealed the game for Rutgers with a fast break dunk with 37 seconds. The Scarlet Knights would add a free throw at the end to pull out the 55-50 win.

Barnett led the Big Green with his 16 points, while junior Marlon Sanders (Cleveland, Ohio) and Mosley grabbed a time-high five boards.

For Rutgers, Jarod Griffin poured in 11 points and JF Inman pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Big Green will be back in action this coming weekend as Dartmouth travels to Colgate for a 1 p.m. tip-off on Saturday.
