BoxscoreHANOVER, N.H. - Despite a 20-point night by junior
Alex Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.), the Dartmouth men's basketball team lost a 72-57 decision to James Madison in the Big Green's home opener Saturday night.
The loss also negated 12 points by junior
DeVon Mosley (Mesquite, Texas), all in the first half, and a double-double by senior
Johnathan Ball (Memphis, Tenn.). For the night, Ball had 11 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out late in the second half.
The game was evenly played for much of the opening half. A jumper by Ball with six minutes to go until the break gave Dartmouth a 25-24 lead.
But the Dukes (2-0) closed with a 13-4 run and went to the locker room, up 37-29.
Despite shooting 40.8 percent for the game and holding a 33-27 advantage in rebounds, Dartmouth (1-2) couldn't close the gap in the second half. JMU was led by Abdulai Jalloh with 22 points and Terrance Carter with 14.
"I thought they played with a sense of urgency tonight," said fourth-year Dartmouth coach
Terry Dunn. "I think they're a good team - I like their team - I like our team. I just thought they did some things defensively to us tonight that didn't allow us to get the looks that we did last year."
Dartmouth upended JMU a year ago, 74-70, in Harrisonburg.
The Big Green returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Rutgers for a 7:30 pm tip.
