BIBER'S 14 POINTS LEADS DARTMOUTH MEN'S BASKETBALL TO VICTORY
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Sophomore Dan Biber (Lorain, Ohio) scored a team-high 14 points, helping the Dartmouth men's basketball team to a 64-59 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore Saturday night.
Biber played in the first three games of the season before suffering a broken hand on November 21. He returned to the lineup against UMES after missing seven games.
Biber was six-of-seven from the free throw line and also had four rebounds, coming off the bench.
Also in double figures for the Big Green (4-7) were junior guard Michael Giovacchini (Salt Lake City, Utah) and freshman center Elgin Fitzgerald (Colorado Springs, Colo.), both with 12. That was a career high for Fitzgerald who was six-of-seven from the floor.
Dartmouth held early leads over the Fighting Hawks, including a 32-28 edge at halftime. But UMES rallied in the second half and held a 55-50 lead with 4:17 to go on a conventional 3-point play by Corey Brown.
Giovacchini scored six straight points to give Dartmouth a 56-55 advantage with 2:57 to play, and sophomore Alex Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) and Biber each drained jumpers for a 60-57 lead with less than a minute to go.
Giovacchini and Biber both made a pair of free throws with less than 15 seconds on the clock to ice the game for Dartmouth.
Defensively, the Big Green held UMES to 32.6 percent from the floor.
Dartmouth returns to action on Tuesday, January 2, hosting Army at 7 p.m.
