BRUNSWICK, Maine – Dartmouth women’s rugby finished in third place at the Bowdoin Polar Bear 7s on Saturday. The Big Green defeated AIC (31-5), Norwich (24-7) and BU (36-0) before falling to Harvard (24-12) in the semifinal, but came back to take down AIC for a second time in the third-place match (26-12).

Army West Point went on to defeat the Crimson in the final to claim automatic qualification to USA Rugby Collegiate 7s Nationals in May. Remaining at-large bids will be decided by USA Rugby based on records throughout the spring season.

Senior Frankie Sands had at least one try in four of the matches, wrapping up the weekend with five for a total of 25 points, while freshman Lilly Durbin was right behind with 24 points from two tries and seven conversions. Classmate Idia Ihensehkien came alive in the final two matches, scoring three times for 15 points.

“We, of course, wanted to claim automatic qualification to nationals,” head coach Katie Dowty said, “but we are no less deterred from a championship run in May and June. With only 14 minutes per match, we know 7s can be an unforgiving game and you always have to be switched on. We made a few too many errors in today’s semifinal and Harvard did well to capitalize on them.

“We hold ourselves to a high standard, so a loss is always going to sting, but we are keeping the long game in mind and taking today’s lessons in stride,” Dowty continued. “A third-place match is always a great chance to show that type of resilience and character, and the team delivered."

Next Saturday, the Green will head to New York for the Army 7s.
