Ivy League titles are in sight this week for the Big Green. Freshman Peter Conklin helped clinch the first Ivy title since 1997 for the men's tennis team. Kierra Sweeney led the women's lacrosse team to its first Ivy tournament bid in five years.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named the Hanover Brick and Brew Athletes of the Week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as the Hanover Brick and Brew Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Kierra Sweeney, Jr., Oakton, Va., Women's Lacrosse
The Dartmouth junior led the team in scoring last week with seven points against Vermont and Yale in a pair of wins. Sweeney scored twice against the Catamounts in a 16-5 victory, only to best herself three days later in a 17-4 win against the Bulldogs with three goals and a pair of assists for a game-high five points. That performance against Yale helped Dartmouth lock up a spot in the Ivy League Tournament for the first time in five years. She is second on the team in scoring with 34 points and 29 goals.
Peter Conklin, Fr., Fairfield, Conn., Men’s Tennis
Peter Conklin won both of his singles matches and one doubles match in the wins over Penn and Princeton over the weekend. Against Penn the freshman from Fairfield, Connecticut had a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Noah Makarome. On Sunday the Tigers tied the match before the Big Green won three straight, including Peter's win at No. 6 to clinch the victory. Dartmouth won its first Ivy League title since 1997.
