Overtime and shootouts go hand-in-hand. This week we had one of each in soccer and field hockey. Junior Hailey Valerio made five saves in a shootout victory over Brown. Justin Donawa assisted on the gamewinner in overtime as the Big Green men's soccer team downed Princeton.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named the Hanover Brick and Brew Athletes of the Week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as the Hanover Brick and Brew Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Hailey Valerio, Jr., Glen Mills, Pa., GK, Field Hockey
The Dartmouth field hockey junior goalkeeper was outstanding in a pair of wins last week. Fighting through the midweek heatwave in all of her equipment, Valerio backstopped the Big Green to a late-game victory in Fairfield, making seven saves. She stopped six shots in 100 minutes of action at Brown three days later between two halves and a pair of overtime periods. She would add five more saves in the shootout in seven rounds to help Dartmouth to the exciting Ivy League win in one of the longest games in recent memory.
Justin Donawa, Jr., Sandys, Bermuda, MF, Men's Soccer
Justin Donawa was a key factor in Saturday’s win over Princeton. Down, 1-0, Donawa headed a pass from freshman Dawson McCartney past the diving goalkeeper, tying the game at one. In the fourth minute of the second overtime, 113 minutes into play, he set up for a free kick and sent the ball to Matt Danilack who booted the ball into the net for the game winning goal.
