FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Freshman Lia Constantine picked the perfect time to score the first goal of her collegiate career.
The rookie’s marker in the 61st minute proved to be the game winner for the Dartmouth field hockey team in a 3-2 victory at Fairfield on Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore Katie Spanos notched her second two-goal game of the season for the Big Green (3-5), who began a four-game road trip with the contest at University Field.
"Hailey (Valerio) had some incredible saves and we had three very nice goals," head coach Amy Fowler said. " I was excited Lia got her first goal as well! It was a total team effort today! And we fought off a hungry Fairfield team. We needed this momentum heading into this weekend, facing a tough Brown team."
The Stags (2-7) scored in just the fourth minute of the game off the stick of Andrea Soler. After Spanos tied it at 1-1 in the 31st minute, Soler responded just over four minutes later with her second of the afternoon to give the home team a lead at the half.
Spanos wasted little time in tying the contest once again, scoring her fifth goal of the season in the 43rd minute with Evie Bird picking up the Green and White’s lone assist of the day on the play.
Constantine finished off a loose ball rebound in the low circle with just 8:07 remaining in regulation to put the visitors ahead for the first time in the game. The team held on for the win, despite several last-minute opportunities by the Stags that included a penalty corner with no time left on the clock.
Junior goalkeeper Hailey Valerio was once again strong in picking up her third win of the year, turning aside seven shots. Caitlin Gilligan – Fairfield’s keeper – made one fewer save and allowed one more goal in being tagged with the loss.
Penalty corners were even at 6-6 as were shots on goal at 9-9.
Dartmouth returns to Ivy League play on Saturday with a noon contest at Brown.
