On ice and on the hardcourt, a senior and a freshman alike are representing the Big Green this winter. In the last season of her Dartmouth career, Olivia Smith is contributing to the success of the women's basketball team. In the first year of his career as a Big Green hockey player, Matt Baker is doing his part to lead the men to a successful winter.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named the Hanover Brick and Brew Athletes of the Week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as the Hanover Brick and Brew Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Olivia Smith, Sr., Yarmouth, Maine, C, Women's Basketball
Senior Olivia Smith dropped a season-high 17 points to lead Dartmouth to an exciting come-from-behind victory over Holy Cross in overtime just before Christmas. The 6-2 center followed that up with a double-double (17 points/11 rebounds) in a New Year's Eve loss at Binghamton.
Matt Baker, Fr., Barrie, Ontario, F, Men's Hockey
Matt Baker scored his first two collegiate home goals in impressive fashion against in-state rival New Hampshire on Friday night at the Ledyard Classic. Baker not only notched the first of the night on a delayed penalty, but followed it up by notching another on the ensuing power play. The second of those two proved to be the game winner as Dartmouth took UNH in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1979 and 1980. Baker’s two goals in the game moved him up to the top of the team’s season leaderboard as the rookie forward now has four.
